How Often Should Hotels and Gyms Replace Towels?

Hotels and gyms should replace towels on condition rather than on a calendar: when the pile thins, hems fray, whites turn grey or a towel stops absorbing water. How quickly that happens depends mostly on your laundry, so there is no honest fixed number of washes. What are the signs a towel needs replacing?
Check towels at the fold, when every one passes through someone's hands anyway. Retire any towel showing one of these signs from guest or member use, and note the cause, because the same cause will keep taking towels out until it is fixed.

What shortens the life of a commercial towel?
Laundry practice, more than the towel itself. Our wholesale towels are 100% combed cotton from long-staple ring-spun yarn, reactive-dyed so the colour bonds with the fibre, wash-tested and finished with reinforced hems for industrial wash cycles. That helps, but no towel outlasts a laundry that gets these wrong:
- Chlorine bleach, which weakens cotton over time and strips colour from dyed towels.
- Overloaded machines, which rinse poorly and leave residue that stiffens pile and blocks absorbency.
- High dryer heat and over-drying, which make cotton brittle and loosen the loops.
- Fabric softener, which coats the fibres so a towel pushes water around instead of taking it up.
- Use as floor cloths or cleaning rags.
When should a gym replace its towels?
Sooner than a hotel, because gym towels are used hard and washed after every session. Watch the long edges, which catch on benches and racks, and the middle of the pile, which takes the sweat. Replacing spa and hotel towels
Guests judge a spa or hotel by what hangs on the rail, so these towels leave guest use earlier. A slight grey, a pulled loop or a faint stain is enough to move a towel out of rooms and treatment areas. Retired towels can go on as cleaning cloths or in staff changing rooms, provided they are marked and kept out of guest stock.
How do you plan towel replacement orders?
Plan from your par count. Record how many towels you retire each month by size and set a trigger: when stock falls to the level your laundry cycle needs, reorder. Production takes 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval, plus freight, so the trigger must fire well before the shelf is empty; hotel towel par levels explains setting the count.
Batching changes the price. Towels pay the base wholesale rate from 50 to 199 pieces, up to 20% off from 200 to 999 and up to 35% off from 1,000, so one larger order can cost less per towel than several small ones, given storage space. Gym towels are £4.50, hand towels £6.50 and bath towels £8 per piece, FOB with branding included.
How do you make replacement towels match the old ones?
Reorder the same size, weight, colour, border and logo, and send the approved proof from the first order with an unused towel as the reference. New towels will still look brighter than stock with months of washing behind it, so replace whole room sets rather than single towels.
