A dobby border towel has a flat, textured band woven across each end, made on the loom by a dobby mechanism that lifts warp threads in a set pattern instead of forming loops. What is a dobby border on a towel?
A dobby border is a band across the towel where the loom weaves a flat, small-repeat pattern in place of pile loops. The dobby is the loom mechanism that raises chosen warp threads in a programmed order, letting one loom switch from terry to a patterned band and back within a single towel.
With little or no pile, the band feels firmer than the rest of the towel and shows a crisp geometric texture. It sits near each end, so a towel folded in thirds or hung on a rail shows it at the front, which is why it is often the first detail a guest notices.
Dobby or satin border: which should you choose?
Choose dobby for a textured, matt band that stands up to daily use, and satin for sheen and a dressier finish. Both are woven in, and both can carry an embroidered logo.
A satin border is woven with long floats, lengths of yarn passing over several threads before tucking under, so the band is smooth and reflects light. Floats are more exposed than a dobby's tight interlacing, so satin suits towels handled gently, in guest bathrooms, spa retail and gift sets, while dobby suits the towel that goes through a hotel laundry every day.

Why do hotel towels have a border?
A border tells a guest the towel was made to a specification rather than picked off a shelf, and it gives housekeeping a straight line to fold against, so every towel on every rail matches.

Can you put a logo on a dobby border?
Yes, and it is the most dependable place for one. The flat band holds stitches on its surface, so edges stay sharp and small lettering stays legible, whereas a logo stitched into loops needs a high stitch count to stop it sinking.
Three layouts are common: the logo on the band itself, the logo on the pile beside the band for a larger mark, or an unstitched band with a woven label doing the naming.
