Towels are not sized in S, M and L. They are specified by dimensions, and in bulk the usual choices are a gym or sports towel, a standard bath towel and a bath sheet, with hand towels and face cloths sitting alongside them. Pick by what the towel has to do, then get the exact centimetres written onto the order rather than relying on the label name.

Which towel sizes do buyers actually order?

The gym or sports size is the workhorse: long and narrow, made to go round a neck or over a machine, and small enough that a member will actually carry it. The standard bath towel is what a spa or a treatment room hands out. The bath sheet is a hotel and country club piece. Hand towels and face cloths get ordered as supporting items rather than as the headline.

Most buyers need two of those rather than one. A gym floor needs the sports size; the showers need something larger. A salon needs a small towel that bleaches well and a larger one for the basin. Our wholesale towels page lists the weights those sizes come in, and the glossary explains the size names you will see quoted.

Sports, bath and sheet sizes have different jobs.

How does the cut change the way a towel folds?

A long narrow towel rolls neatly and stacks badly. A square-ish bath towel folds into a clean rectangle and stacks well but does not roll into anything tidy. If your front desk presents towels in a basket, that detail decides which size looks right on the shelf, and it is worth settling before you order a thousand of the wrong shape.

The border also matters more than people expect. A woven dobby border gives a flat panel for branding and a crisp hem. A plain hem is cheaper and softer but gives you less to work with. Ask which your quote assumes, because two quotes that look identical on price can be describing different towels.

What size suits a member giveaway?

The sports size, almost always. It is the one a member will take home and keep using, which is the entire point of a branded giveaway, and it is the one that fits a kit bag without being folded four times. A bath sheet with a logo on it is a lovely object that lives in an airing cupboard and is never seen again.

If the towel is a retail product rather than a giveaway, the calculation flips and the larger sizes carry a higher price comfortably. Guidance on the sizes gyms buy and how they get used is in personalised gym towels for gyms.

How do you specify dimensions on the order?

Write the finished size in centimetres on the enquiry, not the category name, because a bath towel from one mill and a bath towel from another can differ by ten centimetres in each direction. Then ask for a tolerance. Woven terry shrinks on first wash and every producer works to a tolerance; you want to know what it is before you compare the delivery against a tape measure.

The £150 sample settles the rest. It arrives washed and finished, so it tells you the real size, the real hand feel and the real drape, and the fee is credited against the bulk order. Order a sample before you commit the quantity. Remember too that each size is a separate run against the 50-piece minimum, and how those sizes arrive boxed is covered in how bulk towels are packed.

Write the size onto your internal documents as well, not only the purchase order. Facilities teams order replacements from whatever is written on the shelf label, and a stack marked simply as bath towels will be topped up with something a different shape within a year. Recording the centimetres, the weight band and the border type in one place is what makes a reorder in two years match the original rather than merely resemble it.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about towels — answered.

No. They are specified by finished dimensions in centimetres, and the common names such as bath towel or bath sheet vary between mills, so always state the measurements.

Woven terry shrinks slightly on the first wash. Ask for the finished size and the tolerance in writing so you are measuring the delivery against the right figure.

Each size is its own production run, so it carries its own 50-piece minimum. Two sizes means two lots of 50 rather than 50 split across both.

Any size with a woven dobby border, because the flat panel gives the branding somewhere to sit. On a plain-hemmed towel the logo has to go into the pile instead.
