What carries over from the first run?
The specification. Your digitised stitch file, the print separations, the placement dimensions, the thread and ink references and the style and fabric choice are all on record, which is why a second order usually needs one email rather than a week of proofs. Confirm the quantity and the size split, confirm nothing about the design has changed, and the job goes to the floor. Why can the second batch read a shade off?
Because fabric is dyed in batches, and two batches of the same specified colour can land a fraction apart. Textured and quilted surfaces make it worse by scattering light differently. It is not a fault so much as a property of dyeing, but it is worth designing around rather than discovering. How do you keep repeat jackets consistent?
- Keep one untouched garment from the first run as the physical reference, not a photograph of it.
- Say at enquiry that the order is a repeat and must sit alongside earlier stock.
- Order deeper the first time if you already know the full requirement, rather than splitting it into two thin runs.
- Accept a small shift on a second batch of a dark shade rather than delaying the whole order chasing an exact match.
The most effective of those is the first one. A reference garment lets the batch be checked against something real before it ships, which a colour name in an email cannot do. Is a reorder faster than the first order?
The production window itself does not shrink, but the time before it usually does. On a first order the gap between enquiry and approval is often longer than the build.
