Towel Cotton and Weave Explained: Why GSM Is Not a Quality Rating

Every towel supplier leads with GSM, and every towel buying guide treats it as the quality dial. It is not. GSM is grams per square metre — a measure of how much material is there, and nothing at all about what that material is or how it was spun. You can reach 600 GSM with short, cheap fibres packed densely, and the result will feel rough, shed lint for months and go thin faster than a well-made 500.

Fibre length, and why combed cotton costs more

Raw cotton is a mix of long and short fibres. Carding cleans and aligns them; combing goes further and removes the short ones, typically 15–20% of the mass, leaving only long-staple fibre behind.

That is the whole difference, and it explains most of what people mean by a quality towel. Short fibres have more loose ends. Loose ends are what makes a towel feel scratchy, what sheds as lint in the first dozen washes, and what works free of the yarn over time so the pile thins. Combed cotton starts smoother, stays smoother, and sheds far less.

"Egyptian" and "Turkish" cotton are about growing region and typical staple length rather than a grade, and both terms are used loosely enough on their own that they are not a specification. "100% combed cotton" is a specification. Ask for that.

Reading a yarn count

This is the number almost nobody publishes, and it tells you more than GSM does. Our standard 500 GSM dobby towel specifies pile 12/1, weft 12/1, warp 20/2.

The first number is the yarn thickness — higher means finer. The second is how many strands are twisted together. So 20/2 in the warp is two strands of a fine yarn plied together, which is what gives the towel’s structural threads their strength; 12/1 in the pile is a single, thicker yarn, which is what you want in the loops because bulk is the point there.

The useful check: a plied warp (the /2) means the towel’s frame is built to take tension through hundreds of wash cycles. A single-ply warp is cheaper and is where towels tend to fail at the hem.

Twist: the trade-off nobody explains

Twisting yarn adds strength and reduces bulk. Untwisting it does the opposite. Towel makers pick a point on that line, and it changes the product completely.

  • **Standard twist.** The default. Durable, holds shape, moderate absorbency. Right for gyms, salons and anywhere the wash frequency is punishing.
  • **Low twist.** Softer and more absorbent, slightly less robust. A good middle for hotel bath towels.
  • **Zero twist.** The loops are essentially untwisted fibre. Extraordinarily soft and absorbent — this is what luxury spa towels are — and correspondingly delicate. Zero-twist towels do not belong in a commercial gym.

This is the real answer to why two 550 GSM towels can feel like different products. Same weight, different twist.

Terry, waffle and the dobby band

**Terry** is the familiar looped pile, and it is the only sensible choice where absorbency matters. Loops multiply surface area enormously, which is the whole mechanism by which a towel dries anything.

**Waffle** is a flat honeycomb weave with no pile. It absorbs less but dries far faster, packs flatter and costs less to launder. Good for spa robes, hair wraps and hand towels in a washroom; wrong for a bath towel.

**The dobby band** is the flat woven strip near each end. It is not decoration — it is a structural, low-pile area, and it is the only sensible place to put embroidery. A logo stitched into terry pile sits on loops that move independently, so it distorts, catches and eventually pulls. On the dobby band the stitch has a stable ground. Absorbency gets worse before it gets better

A new towel often barely absorbs. This surprises people and generates complaints, and it is normal: residual spinning and finishing oils coat the fibre and have to wash out. Three or four cycles and the towel reaches its real performance.

The thing that permanently kills absorbency is fabric softener, which works by depositing a hydrophobic film on the fibre — precisely the opposite of what a towel is for. Commercial laundries know this. Tell your staff, because domestic habits do not.

What to actually specify

A towel specification worth quoting against names five things, and GSM is only one of them:

  1. 1Fibre: 100% combed cotton (not just "cotton", not just a country name).
  2. 2Yarn count for pile, weft and warp — and check the warp is plied.
  3. 3Twist: standard, low or zero, chosen for the use rather than the feel in the showroom.
  4. 4Weave: terry or waffle, and whether there is a dobby band for branding.
  5. 5GSM, last, as a weight target once the four above are settled.

No. GSM measures weight, not quality. A 600 GSM towel made from short-staple carded cotton will feel rougher, shed more lint and thin out faster than a well-made 500 GSM towel in combed cotton. Fibre length, yarn count and twist decide how a towel behaves; GSM only decides how heavy it is.

The dobby band is a low-pile, densely woven area that gives embroidery a stable base. Stitching into terry pile puts the logo on loops that move independently, so it distorts, catches and eventually pulls out.
