Bulk jackets can carry a custom woven neck label, a tear-out label or a printed one, and the choice is mostly about whether the jacket is uniform or product. Uniform can keep a standard label. Anything sold to a customer should carry your own. Private label goes further than the collar: it covers labels, swing tags and the packaging the jacket arrives in.

What neck label options exist on outerwear?

A woven label is fabric with your name woven into it, sewn into the collar seam. It is the most durable and the most premium-feeling, and it is what most brands choose. A printed label is ink on a tape or satin ribbon, cheaper and thinner, and it wears faster against the neck. A tear-out label is a woven or printed label with a perforated join so a retailer or a re-brander can remove the original cleanly. On a lined jacket there is also the option of a larger label on the inside body panel, which gives room for composition and care information without crowding the collar.

When is a tear-out label the right call?

When somebody downstream needs to remove it, which is usually a wholesale or white-label arrangement. It is also worth considering if the jacket irritates against bare skin, though on outerwear that matters less than on a tee because there is normally a layer underneath. For a straightforward own-brand order, a sewn woven label is simpler and stronger. The comparison across garment types, including tagless heat transfers, is in neck labels: woven, printed or tagless.

What does private label add beyond the collar?

Tear-out and woven neck labels, swing tags and packaging, which together are what turns a blank jacket into something that looks like it came from your own line. Swing tags carry the price, the size and any barcode you need for retail. Packaging decides what the customer sees before they see the garment. If you are shipping direct to buyers, all three matter more than the shell fabric does, because they are the first contact. How this fits into an ecommerce operation is set out in bulk apparel for ecommerce, and the full jacket range is on the wholesale jackets page.

What artwork is needed for a woven label?

A vector file of the mark, the finished label dimensions, the thread or Pantone colours, and the fold type. Labels are woven, so fine gradients and photographic detail do not translate; a simple wordmark or a bold symbol works best. Send the composition and care wording at the same time, since it usually shares the label or sits on a second one behind it. Terminology such as end-fold, centre-fold and loop is defined in the glossary.

One detail worth settling early is where the label physically sits, because outerwear collars are often lined, padded or taped and there may be no single seam that suits a collar label. On a hooded or high-collar style the brand label sometimes moves to the inside back panel, with a smaller tag inside the side seam carrying composition and care. Agree that placement on the proof, since the labels are sewn in during manufacture and cannot be relocated afterwards. A sample at £150, credited against the bulk order, shows the finished collar before fifty pieces are made.

If you expect to reorder, keep the label specification written down alongside the garment specification: dimensions, fold, thread colours and wording. Labels are cheap to reproduce and expensive to guess at, and a second run that carries a slightly different label is noticeable to anyone who owns both. The words used on label specifications, such as end-fold and selvedge, are covered in the glossary.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about workwear — answered.

No, the minimum is fifty pieces per design regardless of the labelling, because the labels are applied during manufacture rather than afterwards.

Sometimes. On a small label the care and composition information usually sits on a separate tag inside the side seam, while a larger inside-body label can carry the brand and the care details together.

They are ordered alongside the fabric and are built into the 10 to 15 working day production window, provided the label artwork is approved at the same time as the garment artwork rather than later.

Yes. Supply the barcode numbers with the tag artwork and they can be printed on the tags as part of a private label order, which saves relabelling every unit by hand on arrival.
