DTF vs Screen Printing on Jackets & Outerwear

DTF prints your artwork onto a film and heat-applies it, so a photograph costs the same to run as a single-colour logo. Screen printing pushes one colour at a time through a mesh, so each colour adds a screen and a pass. For full-colour artwork on a 50-piece jacket order, DTF is almost always the cheaper and faster answer. For flat two-colour work at volume, screens win.
How many colours before the maths changes?
Roughly around three, though the exact crossover moves with quantity. One or two colours on a smooth shell favour screens strongly, since the setup is small and the run is quick. By the time a design needs four or five screens, the setup cost across fifty jackets has grown enough that a transfer with unlimited colour usually comes out ahead. Gradients and photographic imagery are not really a comparison at all: they either need halftone separations and a lot of screen work, or they go on as DTF. What does each feel like on the shell?
Screen ink on a woven jacket face sits thin and integrates well, particularly on a coach jacket where the surface is smooth to begin with. DTF leaves a film that you can feel with a fingertip, which is more noticeable on a large graphic than a small one. On outerwear this matters less than it does on a soft cotton tee, because nobody is judging the hand feel of a jacket back the way they judge a t-shirt. What does matter is flexibility: a large rigid panel on a shell that creases every time the wearer sits down needs to be applied properly or it will show wear at the folds.
Which one handles a short run better?
DTF, without much argument. There is no screen to burn, no separation to prepare and no colour limit, so a single design at the 50-piece minimum carries almost no setup overhead. That makes it useful for a first drop, for a test of a design you are not yet sure about, or for a run where every jacket carries a slightly different element. Screen printing needs volume to justify the front-loaded work, which is exactly why it gets cheaper per piece so quickly as the quantity rises. Does artwork quality matter more for one than the other?
It matters for both, differently. Screens need clean vector shapes that separate into solid colours, so a soft-edged image has to be redrawn. DTF will happily print whatever resolution you send, which is the trap: a low-resolution file prints exactly as blurry as it is, and a back panel on a jacket is a large area to be blurry across. When is DTF the right call?
Full colour, photographic content, gradients, a short run, or a design you expect to change between orders. It is also the sensible route when the artwork has more colours than the budget has screens, which is the most common real-world version of this decision on a fifty-piece jacket order.
When does screen printing win outright?
Large flat graphics in one or two spot colours, on smooth shells, at volume.
