Heavyweight Hoodies: Why UK Brands Keep Going Heavier
By The Velocity Wear Team
Walk into any streetwear shop in Manchester or Shoreditch and pick up the hoodies. The ones priced highest almost always weigh the most. Heavyweight hoodies aren't just a trend, they've become the default for independent labels trying to compete with big names.
What counts as heavyweight?
There's no official line, but in practice most people mean 400 GSM or more. For comparison, a lot of promotional hoodies sit around 280. Our range goes from 280 up to 450 GSM, so you can pick exactly how dense you want it.
Why heavier sells
- It drapes. A heavy hoodie falls straight and holds its silhouette instead of clinging.
- It feels expensive the moment someone picks it up, which matters in a shop and in an unboxing video.
- It lasts. Dense fabric resists pilling and keeps its shape wash after wash.
- It makes prints look better, because a thick base doesn't pucker under ink.
The trade-offs, honestly
Heavier hoodies cost more to make and more to post. A 450 GSM hoodie can push a parcel into a higher postage band, which hits your margin on every online order. They're also warm. Great in a British winter, less great if your customers are buying for summer festivals. Know who you're selling to.
Pair weight with the right fit
Heavyweight fabric looks best in a relaxed or oversized cut with dropped shoulders. A slim fit in thick fabric can look stiff. If you're launching a label, our oversized hoodie guide walks through the cuts that are selling.
Details that go with a heavy hoodie
- Double-lined hood, so it stands up rather than flopping.
- No drawcords, which is a clean look lots of brands prefer.
- Ribbed cuffs and hem with a bit of weight, so they don't go wavy.
- A woven neck label with your brand name. It's a small cost that changes how the whole piece feels.
Pricing a heavyweight hoodie for your shop
Work out your full landed cost first: the hoodie, decoration, label, packaging, shipping to you, and the postage to your customer. Then look at what comparable independent brands charge. Heavyweight hoodies from small UK labels commonly retail well above promotional hoodies, and customers expect that. Don't undercut yourself because you're new. Price for the quality, then back it up with good photos that show the weight: a hoodie standing on its own hem, a close-up of the rib, the hood holding its shape.
Our volume pricing drops at 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000 pieces. A first drop of 50 in one colour is a common starting point, then add colours once you know which sizes move.
Telling customers why it's heavier
Put the weight on the product page in plain terms: 400 GSM brushed fleece, and what that means for warmth and structure. Customers comparing brands online can't feel fabric, so a clear weight figure and a photo of the hoodie holding its shape does the job. It also justifies the price.
Spec it in writing
When you order, don't just say heavyweight. Give a GSM figure, a fibre composition, a fit, and a colour reference. Ask for a sample and put it next to a hoodie you admire. If it holds its own, you're ready. If not, adjust before 50 pieces get made.
Start with our custom hoodies, where the minimum is 20 per design, or order a sample. For the numbers behind weights, see our GSM explainer.
