What Does GSM Mean on a Hoodie?

GSM stands for grams per square metre: the weight of one square metre of the hoodie's fabric. A higher GSM means denser, heavier cloth, so a 350 GSM hoodie feels substantial and structured while a 240 GSM one feels light and closer to a sweatshirt. It is a measure of weight only, not of softness, durability or fit, which is why the number should be the start of your decision rather than the whole of it.

Grams Per Square Metre, Taken Literally

Cut a square metre out of the body fabric, weigh it, and you have the GSM. That is all the figure is. It is measured on the fabric before it is cut and sewn, so it describes the cloth rather than the finished garment. Two hoodies made from identical fleece can weigh different amounts on the scales purely because one has a heavier rib or a lined hood.

Cotton also absorbs moisture from the air, so the same fabric measured in a humid mill in July and in a dry warehouse in February will not give quite the same reading. Treat a difference of ten or fifteen GSM between two garments as noise. Fifty or more is real, and you will feel it.

What the Common Hoodie Weights Feel Like

Most hoodies sold for custom work sit in a fairly narrow band, and knowing where each one lands saves a lot of guesswork.

  • 240 to 260 GSM: light, soft and cheap to post. Fine for summer events and giveaway kit, but it drapes rather than holds shape and reads as promotional the moment somebody picks it up.
  • 280 to 300 GSM: the everyday middle ground. Warm enough for a British autumn, not bulky, and the weight most staff hoodies end up at.
  • 320 to 350 GSM: where a hoodie starts to feel like a product people would buy rather than accept. It holds shape at the cuffs and hem and gives print a stable base.
  • 400 GSM and above: heavyweight, boxy, often oversized by design. Excellent for streetwear and premium merch, warm indoors, and heavier to ship.
  • Under 220 GSM: a sweatshirt in a hoodie's shape. Usable for hot-weather events, but do not sell it as heavyweight.

Why Two Hoodies at 320 GSM Can Feel Different

GSM tells you the mass of the fabric, not how that mass is arranged. A hoodie can reach 320 GSM using a small number of thick, coarse yarns or a larger number of fine, tightly spun ones. Ring-spun cotton produces a smoother, softer surface than open-end carded cotton at exactly the same weight. Then there is the inside face: brushed fleece has been mechanically raised to create that fluffy hand, while loopback fleece leaves the loops intact and feels flatter, cooler and more technical.

Fibre blend matters too. A cotton-rich fleece feels dense and dry. A polyester-rich blend feels smoother and springier and holds shape through more washes, but never has the same cottony hand. None of it shows up in the GSM figure.

The Number Says Nothing About Shape

Weight and cut are independent. A 350 GSM hoodie in a slim, short body wears completely differently to the same fabric in a boxy, dropped-shoulder fit. Rib quality is another quiet difference: good cuffs have enough elastane to recover after being pushed up your forearms all day, and cheap ones go baggy within a month regardless of how heavy the body fabric is. Fit description and rib composition deserve as much attention as the GSM.

What Weight Does to Your Decoration

Heavier fleece is a friendlier surface. It is more opaque, so a print sits on a stable base rather than showing the body through it, and it resists the distortion that happens when lighter fabric stretches under a press. Embroidery especially prefers weight, because dense fabric supports the stitching and stops a logo puckering at its edges. On very light hoodies a large embroidered design can pull the fabric in and never sit flat again.

The one place heavier is not automatically better is brushed fleece with a long pile. The fluff sits above fine print detail and softens thin lines. If your logo has hairline strokes, a flatter loopback face at the same weight holds detail better.

Weight, Postage and the Cost You Forget

Heavier hoodies cost more to buy and more to ship, and if you are reselling merch and posting single items, that second cost lands on every order rather than once on the whole run. Do that sum before committing to a 400 GSM range for an online store. For staff kit going to one address in a single consignment, the difference is trivial, so buy the weight you want people to wear.

Choosing a Weight Without a Garment in Front of You

Ordering online means you cannot handle the fleece first, so anchor the decision to what the hoodie is for. Outdoor winter wear for a groundskeeper, a marshal or a match-day crew wants 320 GSM or more. Indoor wear over a shirt in a heated office is comfortable at 280 to 300.
