Four broad levels, from light wear on the edges to rips with visible repairs. Distressing is wear added on purpose: abrasion, fading, fraying and holes placed where a jacket would wear naturally. Why does distressing vary from jacket to jacket?
Because the wear is worked into each jacket and every piece of denim reacts slightly differently. Denim is dyed so that the colour sits mostly on the surface of the yarn, and how much blue comes away depends on the exact yarns at that spot. Two jackets given the same treatment will not fray at the same thread. That is the appeal of distressing, and the reason it cannot be specified like a logo.

How do you specify distressing so 50 jackets match?
Define where, how much and what the limit is, then approve it on a sample. Words like light and heavy mean different things to different people, so pair each with a photo or a marked-up drawing. A specification that holds across a run covers five points:
- 1A reference: a jacket you own, or photos of the front, back and sleeves of the look you want.
- 2The zones: collar, cuffs, pocket edges, placket, hem, elbows or back panel.
- 3A level for each zone from the table above, and the areas that must stay clean.
- 4A limit on holes, such as none through the back panel, so heavy wear stays where you want it.
- 5The approved sample, which becomes the standard the bulk run is held to.
One or two samples cost £150 with worldwide shipping, and the amount is credited when the order goes ahead. Which washes pair with distressing?
Vintage and stonewash are the natural partners, because a softened, lighter blue makes abrasion look like years of wear. Acid effects add high-contrast marbling that suits heavy, streetwear-led distressing. Raw denim is the odd one out: it is bought for the wear its owner puts in, so pre-distressing works against the point. Does distressing affect decoration and durability?
It affects both, so plan them together. Keep embroidery, patches and back prints clear of distressed zones, since a rip running into a logo looks like a fault rather than a style. Heavy rips at stress points such as elbows or pocket corners shorten a jacket's life, while repaired finishes hold up better.
