Where can embroidery go on a denim jacket?

Stitch load matters because it drives machine time and the feel of the panel. A small chest logo runs to a few thousand stitches; a filled design across the whole back can run to tens of thousands. How does heavy denim take stitches?
Better than most fabrics. Heavyweight denim, around 12 to 14 oz, is stable enough that dense embroidery lies flat instead of pulling the cloth into ripples, known as puckering. The needle does have to punch through a tight twill (the diagonal weave that gives denim its ridged face), so the finest possible detail is set by thread thickness. What embroidery cannot do is cross a seam: the folded, double-stitched flat-felled seams are too thick to stitch through cleanly.
Lightweight denim, 8 to 10 oz, needs more care. It is embroidered with a stabiliser, a backing sheet held behind the fabric to stop it stretching under the needle, and the design is kept less dense. A big stitched back on a light jacket behaves far better as an open or outline design than as a solid fill.
How big should a back embroidery be?
As big as the panel allows, and no denser than it needs to be. The usable area sits below the yoke seam and above the waistband, and it shrinks on smaller sizes. Stitch count follows filled area, not width: double the width of a solid design and you roughly quadruple the stitches, the machine time and the stiffness of the panel.
Three ways keep a large back piece wearable: satin-stitched outlines (long, glossy stitches laid side by side) instead of solid fills, denim left showing through as part of the design, or the densest element moved onto a patch. Does puff embroidery work on denim?
Yes, for bold shapes and chunky lettering. Puff embroidery stitches over a foam layer so the design stands raised off the surface, and firm denim supports the density that needs. Which thread colours read well on denim?
Contrast on dark washes, tonal on premium pieces. On raw or rinse denim, white, cream, gold and bright colours show clearly. On stonewash and lighter finishes, navy, black and deeper shades hold their edges. Tonal thread, matched close to the denim, gives a mark that shows only when light catches it.
