Custom Towels for Business: A US Buyer's Guide
By The Velocity Wear Team
Custom towels get about thirty-six hundred US searches a month with almost no competition. Buyers range from boutique gyms and day spas to hotels, barbershops, golf courses and wellness brands. What they need to know is surprisingly similar: which size, which weight, and how to brand a towel so the logo still looks sharp after two hundred washes.
Sizes, in inches and centimeters
- Gym towel: about 12 × 31 in (30 × 80 cm), 450 GSM.
- Face towel or washcloth size: about 16 × 24 in (40 × 60 cm), 450 GSM.
- Hand towel: about 18 × 30 in (45 × 75 cm), 500 GSM.
- Bath towel: about 28 × 55 in (70 × 140 cm), 550 GSM.
- Bath sheet: about 35 × 71 in (90 × 180 cm), 650 GSM.
All are 100% combed cotton.
What GSM means
GSM is grams per square meter, the towel's weight. Higher GSM feels plusher and absorbs more but takes longer to dry. Gyms benefit from lighter, faster-drying towels. Spas and hotels benefit from heavier, luxurious ones.
Branding options
- Embroidery: logos, monograms and names stitched in. Premium and durable.
- Woven labels: subtle branded tags sewn into the hem.
- Dobby borders: a flat woven band that looks refined and holds embroidery crisply.
We don't print photos or full-color artwork on cotton towels. Terry loops don't hold detailed prints well, and embroidery simply lasts longer.
Colors
White is the hospitality standard. Colors are reactive-dyed and colorfast through normal washing, with more than twenty options. Dark colors suit gyms, barbers and salons where sweat or product would show on white.
Common mistakes
- 1Choosing a luxury-weight towel for a gym that needs fast drying.
- 2Using a detailed logo that turns fuzzy on terry.
- 3Ordering exactly enough towels, then running out during laundry turnaround.
- 4Using fabric softener, which kills absorbency.
How many to order
Estimate daily use, then hold two to three times that to cover laundry. Hotels typically hold about three sets per room.
Minimum and pricing
Towels are woven rather than cut and sewn, so the minimum is 50 pieces per design. Prices include branding and are set per size on our wholesale towels page. We invoice in US dollars.
Quick checklist before you order
- Size and weight matched to use?
- White or color?
- Embroidery, woven label or dobby border?
- Logo simple enough for terry?
- Stock for laundry turnaround?
Matching towels to your industry
- Gyms and studios: gym-size towels in dark colors, 450 GSM for quick drying.
- Hotels and vacation rentals: white bath towels and bath sheets with tonal embroidery.
- Spas: heavier bath sheets and face towels, subtle branding.
- Salons and barbers: dark hand and face towels with a bold logo.
- Golf clubs: gym-size or hand towels in practical colors.
- Corporate gifts: bath sheets or hand towel sets with a monogram or small logo.
Samples before bulk
Towels are tactile, and photos can't show softness or weight. Order a sample to check the feel, test it through your laundry process a few times, and see how the embroidery holds up. It's the best way to avoid a pallet of towels that don't suit your business.
Consistency across reorders
Towel colors can vary slightly between dye lots, and whites vary between mills. Keep a retained sample and a written spec with size, GSM, color reference and logo placement. Quote it on reorders so new stock matches what's already in use.
Shipping and storage
Towels are bulky. Plan storage space before a large delivery arrives, keep towels in their packaging in a dry place, and rotate stock so older towels are used first.
Timing
Production takes 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval, plus shipping. Request a sample to feel the weight first.
