What microfiber is
Microfiber is a synthetic fabric, usually polyester and polyamide, made from extremely fine fibers. It's light, thin and fast-drying, and it grabs dust and dirt well.
Where microfiber wins

A note on sustainability claims

Absorbency, compared fairly
Both materials absorb water well, but differently. Microfiber's fine fibers pull moisture quickly and hold it in a thin, light fabric. Cotton terry's loops hold a large volume of water and feel plush while doing it. For drying a body after a shower, most people prefer cotton. For wiping equipment, a car or a golf ball, microfiber's grip and quick drying often win.
Laundering and lifespan
Microfiber should generally be washed without fabric softener and without cotton items, which shed lint that clogs the fibers. It can be damaged by high heat. Cotton tolerates hot commercial washing well, which is why hotels and spas rely on it. Over a long life of hot washes, quality cotton holds up well.
Branding differences
Microfiber takes full-color sublimation printing, so photos and complex artwork are possible edge to edge. Cotton terry is best embroidered or with a woven label, which suits logos, monograms and crests. If your brand needs a photo on a towel, microfiber is the right material. If you want premium, stitched branding, cotton is.
Guest and client perception
In hospitality, cotton reads as luxury and microfiber can read as sporty or budget, even when microfiber is high quality. In fitness and outdoor sports, microfiber feels technical and appropriate. Match the material to the setting your customers expect.
Using both in one business
Many businesses use both. A gym might offer cotton towels at the front desk and microfiber cloths for equipment wipe-downs. A golf club might sell microfiber cart towels and embroidered cotton towels in the pro shop. Choose each for its job.
