Custom cap closures come in four types: a plastic snap, a strap, a strap with a buckle, and the closed back of a fitted cap. Velocity Wear builds them, along with custom under-brims and woven labels, into caps made to order at 50 per design, in 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval. These are the details that make a cap look like your brand's own product.

Which closure should a custom cap have?

Choose the closure by who wears the cap and how it should read. A snap is quick and casual, a strap or buckle looks finished, and a fitted back looks cleanest but needs sizes. Every closure below is available across the cap range.

Cap closure types compared
ClosureHow it worksLookBest for
Snap (snapback)Two plastic straps with rows of studs that press togetherCasual, streetwearSnapbacks, truckers, events
StrapA strap drawn through a slide at the back and adjusted to fitRelaxed, everydayDad caps, corporate gifts
BuckleA strap fastened through a buckleFinished, premiumBrand ranges, retail caps
FittedNo closure: a closed back made in head sizesClean, tailoredRetail ranges, teams

Every closure except fitted makes the cap one size and adjustable; fitted caps are ordered in sizes, mixed freely inside the 50. A custom closure is chosen for your run rather than left at the default: a colour that matches the cap or picks up your brand colour, or a buckle where the style would normally have a snap. How closures differ in wear is covered in snapback vs fitted vs strapback caps.

What can go on an under-brim?

Anything flat and full-colour. The under-brim is the underside of the peak, and because it is flat it takes a print that embroidery could never reproduce: a pattern, a photograph, a line of text, or the brand colour as a solid panel. It is the part the wearer sees most, and custom hat design ideas shows how to pair it with the front logo.

  • A repeat pattern of the logo or a brand motif.
  • A message: a thank-you line, a slogan or a web address.
  • A contrast colour that matches the closure or the label.
  • Artwork marking a limited drop, so the edition shows underneath.

Where do labels go on a cap?

Inside the crown. A woven label is made by weaving thread into the design rather than printing onto fabric, so its detail does not wash out. On a cap it is sewn inside and carries the brand name, and on a fitted cap it can carry the size as well. It is the detail that turns a promotional cap into a product a clothing brand can put on sale.

Labels and packaging across the wider range are covered by the labels and packaging service, and neck labels on wholesale caps deals with cap labels specifically, including what the label should say.

Can a sweatband be printed with a logo?

Not as a listed option. The sweatband is the band sewn around the inside edge of the crown, and its job is to absorb sweat and keep the fit comfortable; ours are made to hold their shape rather than to carry branding. The branding that goes inside the cap is the woven label, and printed branding goes on the under-brim, where it is flat and easy to see.

Which details are worth adding?

Match the details to the job the cap does. Each adds a line to the quote, so a cap handed out once needs fewer of them than one sold on a rail.

  • Retail and clothing brands: a woven label, a printed under-brim and a custom closure, because a shopper turns the cap over before paying.
  • Teams and clubs: a closure in the club colour and a woven label.
  • Staff caps: a label and an easy-to-adjust closure.
  • Event giveaways: the front logo only, with the budget going on quantity.

Eyelets, the small stitched holes on each panel, are construction rather than a branding position, but check them on the proof when adding a side logo, since a side hit sits close by. How custom caps are made shows where every part sits.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about caps — answered.

A custom cap can have a snap closure, where two plastic straps press together, a strap closure, a strap with a buckle, or a fitted closed back with no closure at all. Snap, strap and buckle closures make the cap one size and adjustable. Fitted caps are made in head sizes, which can be mixed within the 50-piece minimum.

An under-brim print is a design printed on the underside of a cap's peak. Because that surface is flat, it can carry full-colour artwork, patterns, photographs or a message that embroidery cannot reproduce. The wearer sees it every time they put the cap on, which makes it well suited to retail caps and limited drops.

Printing on the sweatband is not one of the custom options Velocity Wear lists for caps. The sweatband's job is to absorb sweat and help the cap hold its fit. Branding inside a cap goes on a woven label instead, and full-colour printed artwork goes on the under-brim, where it is flat and easy to see.

Yes. Every cap within a design carries identical artwork, including the under-brim print, the label and the closure. Two under-brim prints on otherwise identical caps make two designs, each with its own 50-piece minimum. If you want variety, build it into one under-brim pattern that every cap shares.

A fitted cap looks cleaner at the back because it has no closure, which suits retail ranges and teams, but it has to be ordered in head sizes. An adjustable cap with a snap, strap or buckle is one size and fits everyone without a size list, which suits staff, events and gifts.
