GSM Explained for Bulk Caps

GSM is grams per square metre of the crown fabric before it is cut or sewn. A higher number means denser cloth, a firmer crown and more resistance to creasing. On a cap it explains less than it does on a hoodie, because the interlining, the seam count and the sweatband all shape how the finished piece feels. Read it alongside the build, never on its own.
What does the number describe, and what does it miss?
It describes mass per area of one flat piece of cloth. That tells you something real: a denser twill resists abrasion, holds a printed or stitched mark more cleanly and creases less. What it misses is everything that happens after the fabric is cut. Two caps made from identical cloth can feel completely different once one has a stiffened front and the other does not.
It also misses weave. Twill, canvas and ripstop at the same weight behave differently under a needle and against the light. If a quote lists only a number, ask what the weave is as well; the terms are defined in the glossary if a specification arrives full of shorthand.
Which weight suits which cap style?
Structured five and six panel caps want the heavier end. The whole point of that silhouette is a crown that stands up and a brim that stays where it is put, and lighter cloth undermines both even with an interlining behind it. Dad caps want the lighter end, because the shape depends on the fabric relaxing against the head rather than resisting it.
Truckers sit apart from the question. The back and sides are mesh, which carries no meaningful weight at all, so the only weight decision is the front panel. That is why truckers can carry heavy decoration on a substantial front while staying cool to wear, and it is one of the reasons they are the default for outdoor use.

Does a heavier crown take embroidery better?
Generally yes, and the difference is visible. Embroidery drives thousands of needle penetrations into a small area, and every one of them displaces yarn. Denser cloth absorbs that without the puckering and dimpling you get at the edges of a large design on a light crown. For 3D puff, which sits proud and pulls harder still, a firm front panel is close to essential.
Surface decoration does not care nearly as much. DTF and sublimation sit on the cloth rather than through it, so a lighter crown carries a printed graphic perfectly well. If your artwork is print rather than stitch, you can choose the weight purely on how you want the cap to feel.
Where does weight show up in the price?
Less in the unit price than people expect, and more in the freight. Caps start from $12 a piece at the 50-piece minimum, and the cloth itself is a modest share of that figure next to construction, closure and decoration. What weight does change is the shipping weight of a pallet, which matters on larger runs into the USA and Europe.
Quantity moves the unit price far harder than fabric ever will. The bands run 50 to 99, 100 to 249, 250 to 499, 500 to 999 and 1,000-plus, with up to 35% off the 50-piece price at the top, so a heavier cap ordered deep can easily cost less per piece than a lighter one ordered at the minimum.
