Custom Ugly Christmas Sweaters: The Printed Sweatshirt Route

By The Velocity Wear Team

Custom ugly Christmas sweaters get about nineteen hundred US searches a month, spiking in November. Companies want them for holiday parties, teams for group photos, families for matching pictures. Before designing, it's worth knowing the two very different ways to make one.

Knitted vs printed

A traditional ugly sweater is knitted, with the design worked into the yarn. Fully custom knitted designs are a specialist job with longer lead times and higher minimums. A printed sweatshirt reproduces the ugly sweater look, including the snowflakes, reindeer and chaotic patterns, on soft fleece. It's quicker, cheaper, easier to personalize, and honestly more comfortable. We make printed and embroidered sweatshirts, not knitwear.

Design ideas

  • Your company logo in a Fair Isle pattern with reindeer.
  • An industry joke: accountants with calculator snowflakes.
  • The office pet or mascot in a Santa hat.
  • Each team member's name on the back like a jersey.
  • A family photo turned into a festive pattern.

Print method

Busy, colorful ugly sweater designs suit DTF printing, which handles many colors and detail without per-color setup. Add embroidered patches or puff print accents for texture.

Deadlines

Production takes 10 to 15 working days after artwork approval, plus shipping. For a mid-December party, approve artwork by early November. Holiday shipping slows down in December.

Sizing

Collect sizes privately. Sweatshirts are often worn over shirts, so some people size up. Share a size chart in inches.

Contests and prizes

Running an ugly sweater contest? Give everyone the same base sweatshirt and let teams add accessories. Or order a few extra-ugly versions as prizes.

Wear them again

Leave the year off and the sweatshirt works every holiday season. That's better value and less waste.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Expecting custom knitwear in three weeks.
  2. 2Approving artwork in December.
  3. 3Tiny text lost in a busy pattern.
  4. 4Putting the year on something meant to be reused.

Quick checklist

  • Printed sweatshirt route chosen?
  • Artwork approved by early November?
  • Sizes collected privately?
  • Names on back?
  • Year left off?

Making a printed design look knitted

The ugly sweater look relies on a few visual cues: blocky pixel-style patterns, repeating snowflakes and trees, bands of pattern across the chest, and deliberately clashing colors. A designer can build these into a print that reads as knitwear from a distance. Adding a real texture element, like an embroidered patch or a puff print pom-pom, makes it feel more tactile and funnier up close.

Company party contests

If your party has an ugly sweater contest, custom sweatshirts can be the base while teams compete on accessories: tinsel, bells, lights. Or run a design contest in October where employees submit ideas and the winning design becomes the company sweatshirt. It builds buzz and gives people ownership.

Remote teams and virtual parties

Distributed companies hold virtual holiday parties where everyone appears in the same sweatshirt on camera. Order in bulk, then ship to each employee's home early enough for delivery before the party. Build in extra shipping time in December, and collect addresses and sizes in one form.

Families and friend groups

Big families and friend groups love a matching holiday sweatshirt for photos and gift exchanges. If you have 20 or more people, one design with names on the back works well. Mix youth and adult sizes in the same order.

Charity tie-ins

Many offices tie sweater day to a holiday fundraiser, with employees donating to wear the sweatshirt or buying one with proceeds going to a local charity. Be transparent about how much reaches the charity.
