50-piece minimum · Mixed sizes · We never share your details

Three options cover it. A custom woven label is sewn into the neck and is what most brands want. A tear-out label is stitched so the wearer can remove it, leaving a clean neck with the care information printed inside instead. A printed neck transfer puts the artwork straight onto the fabric with nothing to sew. All three are available on a 50-piece run, and all three add a few days to the build.

What does each label type give you?

Woven labels are made on a loom, so the artwork is thread rather than ink and it will not fade or wash off. Fine detail and small text need a damask weave rather than a satin one, and very small type simply will not resolve at all. They sit slightly proud against the neck, which some wearers notice on a soft fleece and most do not. This is the default for anyone building a label they intend to sell.

Tear-out labels are woven the same way but stitched along one edge only, so the whole tag lifts away. The care and composition information has to live somewhere permanent, which means a satin label in the side seam. Printed neck transfers avoid the seam entirely and are the softest option against the skin, though the print sits on the garment surface and will wear like any other print over enough washes. The distinctions between the three are covered in more depth in neck labels: woven, printed or tagless.

What does private label actually involve?

Relabelling is one piece of it. A full private label hoodie carries a custom woven neck label, a sewn care label with fibre composition and wash symbols, a branded swing tag, and often custom packaging. Each of those is a separate item with its own artwork and its own production step, and each has to be ready before the garments are finished, because they are attached during make-up rather than afterwards. Send all four sets of artwork together and the schedule stays intact.

The labels themselves are woven or printed in their own quantities, which is worth knowing when you are planning. Label minimums are usually higher than 50 pieces because the setup on a loom is fixed, so you may end up holding labels for a future run. That is not a bad outcome: the second order then skips a step. Options and current per-piece prices sit on the wholesale hoodies page, and the terminology is defined in the apparel glossary.

How does a label change the timeline?

Production is 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval, and custom labels are part of that artwork. If the label design is still being argued about a week after the garment artwork was signed off, the clock has not started. Approve them together. The one thing that genuinely extends the schedule is a woven label with a new weave setup, and even then it runs alongside fabric preparation rather than after it.

A sample is £150 and credited against the bulk order, and it is the only way to judge a neck label properly. Woven labels feel different against fleece than they look on a proof, and the difference between a satin and a damask weave is entirely tactile. If you are relabelling to sell, take the sample. If you are issuing staff kit and the neck label is a nicety, you can reasonably approve on a proof and save the time.

Which option should a first-time brand choose?

Woven neck label plus a side-seam care label. It is the combination that reads as a real brand on a rail, it carries the compliance information without cluttering the collar, and it does not depend on a print surviving. Tear-outs are a refinement for a second or third run, once you know the neckline and the fabric. Printed transfers make most sense for garments that are being given away rather than sold, where the label is branding rather than a product feature. What the compliance side requires is in care labels and clothing compliance, and if you are still settling the brand itself, building a brand identity for your clothing label is the place to start.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about custom hoodies — answered.

On a made-to-order run there is no manufacturer label to remove, because the neck is finished with yours from the start. That is the difference between relabelling blanks and ordering made to order.

Small text needs a damask weave and even then there is a floor below which letters fill in. Send the artwork early and we will tell you what will resolve at the size you want.

Not always. Labels are woven in their own runs with their own setup, so you may receive more labels than garments and hold the surplus for a repeat order.

Yes, as long as you supply the number and the symbology. Barcodes have to be artworked at a size that scans, so send the specification with the tag design rather than after it.
