Hoodie Colors That Sell: Picking Shades for Merch and Brands

By The Velocity Wear Team

If you ask a room of people to pick a hoodie color, you'll get a room full of opinions. If you look at what actually sells, the answer is a lot more boring, and a lot more useful. Here's how to choose colors for a brand drop, a team order or a merch table.

The reliable sellers

  • Black. Always first. Hides stains, flatters most people, makes almost any print pop.
  • Heather gray. The classic athletic look and the kindest background for colorful designs.
  • Navy. Smarter than black and a favorite for schools, companies and teams.
  • White or cream. Beautiful in photos, but shows dirt fast.

If you're only ordering one color, pick black or heather gray. If you're ordering two, pick both.

Colors trending with brands

Independent brands have moved toward earthy and washed tones: brown, olive, sage, sand, slate blue, faded black and dusty pink. They photograph beautifully on social media and feel less promotional. The catch is they can be more polarizing, so they work best as a second or seasonal color, not your only one.

Matching colors to the buyer

  • Teams and schools: match the team colors, and consider heather gray with team-color print as a crowd-pleaser.
  • Companies: navy, charcoal and black look professional and hide wear.
  • Merch for bands and creators: black is king; one bold accent color can be a limited edition.
  • Gyms: black, charcoal and muted greens and browns.
  • Churches and nonprofits: approachable colors like heather gray, royal blue or a soft green.

Think about the print on the hoodie

A hoodie color and a design color don't exist separately. Dark ink on dark fleece disappears. Bright ink on black sometimes needs a white underbase to stay vivid, which can add cost. Light gray is forgiving with nearly every ink color. Before committing, mock the design in each candidate color in the design studio.

Tonal designs

A tone-on-tone print or embroidery, like black on black or sand on sand, has become a signature look for premium brands. It's subtle and confident. It also doesn't shout from across a room, so for event merch or teams that need to be recognizable, choose contrast instead.

Colors to be careful with

  • Very bright neon, which looks great online and polarizes in person.
  • Pale colors for workwear, which show stains quickly.
  • Red for heavy prints, since some reds can show dye migration with certain inks. Ask about it.
  • Colors that don't repeat reliably, if you'll need to reorder the exact shade later.

How to decide on sizes per color

Our minimum is 20 per design, and a different hoodie color counts as its own design. So two colors means 20 of each. Rather than splitting a small order into four colors of five, order one or two colors properly and add more once you know what sells.

Regional color preferences

School and team colors dominate regional sales. A brand in Texas may sell burnt orange; one in Seattle might sell forest green. If you sell locally, lean into local colors.

Testing colors with pre-orders

Offer two or three colors in a pre-order and let demand decide what you produce.

Lock the shade down

Write down exact color names or references on every order. When you reorder, you want the same navy, not a slightly different navy. Browse our custom hoodies, then price a run on the calculator.

Order what you just read about

Every range is made to order from a 20-piece minimum in 10–15 working days, with tiered pricing up to 40% off at volume. Price your order or order a sample pack first.
