Custom Printed T-Shirts: A Quality Checklist Before You Buy

Custom printed t-shirts get over thirty thousand US searches a month, and most product photos look great. The difference shows up in the hand and in the laundry. If you're ordering a batch for a brand, business or team, a few minutes with a sample and this checklist can save a lot of disappointment.
1. Feel the fabric
Rub it between your fingers. Combed ring-spun cotton feels smooth and soft. Cheaper carded cotton feels rougher and a little scratchy. Hold it up to a light. Very thin fabric that you can see straight through won't hold its shape long.
2. Check the collar
The collar is the first thing to fail. Look for a rib collar that lies flat and springs back when stretched. Gently pull it and let go. If it stays stretched, it'll look like bacon after a few washes. Our guide to collars that hold their shape goes deeper.
3. Look at the seams
- Shoulder seams should be taped, which helps them keep shape.
- Stitching should be even with no loose threads.
- The hem should sit flat, not twisted or wavy.
- Side seams should run straight down, not spiral toward the front.
4. Judge the print by touch
A good screen print feels smooth and flexible. Stretch the fabric gently. The print should stretch with it, not crack. DTF prints should have smooth edges without a stiff border. Water-based and discharge prints should feel almost like part of the fabric.
5. Check placement
Is the print centered and straight? A common rule is that a full-front print starts about three to four inches below the collar on an adult tee. A print sitting too low looks like a bib. Measure a sample and use it as your spec.
6. Wash test it
Wash your sample five times the way your customers or team will: normal cycle, normal dryer. Then check shrinkage, twisting, print fading and collar shape. It's the single most useful quality test and almost nobody does it.
7. Ask the right questions

- 2Is the fabric pre-shrunk?

- 4Can I see a physical sample before production?

8. Don't forget labels
For shirts you sell, US labeling rules require fiber content, country of origin, the identity of the manufacturer or dealer, and care instructions. A custom printed or woven neck label also makes a tee feel like a brand rather than a blank.
Quality issues and what causes them
- Twisting side seams: fabric not cut on grain or poor sewing.
- Print cracking: under-cured ink or heavy prints on stretchy fabric.
- Shrinkage: fabric not pre-shrunk or washed too hot.
- Pilling: lower-quality short fibers.
- Wavy collars: weak rib or overstretching during sewing.
Knowing the cause helps you ask suppliers the right questions.
Quality at scale
Ask how production runs are checked against the approved sample, and inspect a random selection of every delivery.

Run the same checks on every reorder, not just the first order. Consistency is part of quality.
