Custom Long Sleeve T-Shirts: Weight, Sleeves and Prints

A long sleeve tee is a t-shirt with two extra things to get right: a heavier fabric requirement, because thin jersey clings and shows the arm, and a sleeve print position that behaves differently on every size in the run. Around 180 to 200 GSM is where a long sleeve starts reading as a garment, and a sleeve design should be sized to the smallest garment in the order, not the largest.
Why 150 GSM Is a Problem Here Specifically
On a short sleeve tee, a light 150 GSM jersey is fine. It drapes, it is cool in summer, nobody minds. Add sleeves and the same fabric behaves differently: it clings along the forearm, shows every contour of the arm, and wrinkles at the elbow within an hour. A sleeve is a narrow tube under constant tension, far less forgiving than a loose body panel.
Somewhere around 180 to 200 GSM the garment stops looking like a base layer and starts looking like clothing. From about 220 GSM up you get the boxy streetwear long sleeve that holds its shape at the cuff and hem. That is a style decision, but the floor is not: going light on a long sleeve is a false economy.
Set-In or Raglan Changes What You Can Print
A set-in sleeve has a seam running around the shoulder, giving a defined shoulder line and a clean flat panel down the outer arm. It is the streetwear default and the shape most sleeve prints assume. A raglan runs a diagonal seam from underarm to collar, giving more shoulder movement and a sportier look.
The practical consequence is that a raglan eats the top of the sleeve. A design intended to start high on the shoulder will run straight into that diagonal seam, so raglan sleeves suit prints placed lower on the arm, nearer the forearm. Choose the construction and the print position together rather than in sequence.
Cuffs and Hems Are Not a Detail
A ribbed cuff grips the wrist, holds the sleeve in place under a jacket and suits layering. A plain hemmed cuff drops open and reads more relaxed.
For printing there is a catch. Ribbed cuffs stretch, so a design placed close to the cuff distorts when worn and looks wavy on the arm. Keep prints clear of the ribbing, and if a design must run to the wrist, use a hemmed cuff.
How a Sleeve Print Actually Gets Made
It is a separate operation. The garment goes onto a narrow sleeve platen, one arm at a time, printed as its own pass. So a sleeve print is a separate location, priced as one, and on screen printing it carries its own setup per colour. Two sleeves printed means two locations, not one.
It also means there are physical limits. Printable width is set by the platen and by the sleeve itself, and you cannot print cleanly across the underarm seam, so a design that wraps the whole arm is not a straightforward job. Vertical repeating text down the outer sleeve is popular because it fits those limits naturally.
Size the Sleeve Print for the Smallest Garment in the Run
Here is the point most people learn the expensive way. Sleeve width varies a lot across a size range, and print positions are usually set once for the whole run. A design sized for an XL sleeve wraps into the underarm seam on a small, or runs off the printable area entirely.
So set the artwork to the narrowest sleeve in the order and let it sit generously on the larger sizes, where nobody notices. Or split the run into two size bands and pay the extra setup knowingly. Do not approve a proof photographed on a large and assume the smalls are fine.
- Specify sleeve print position as a measurement down from the shoulder seam, so it repeats across the run.
- Set the design width to the smallest sleeve in the order, not the average or largest.
- Keep a couple of centimetres clear of the underarm seam and any ribbed cuff.
- Each sleeve is a separate print location for pricing, and screen printing adds setup per colour on each.
- If the design must wrap the arm, raise it before artwork; a full wrap is not a standard sleeve print.

Blanks, Seams and Colour
Tubular bodies have no side seams and cost less, but they twist slightly after washing, which shows more on a long sleeve because the sleeve seam is a reference line. Side-seamed bodies hold their shape better. For anything sold rather than given away, side-seamed is worth the small extra.
Heather and marl shades blend dyed and undyed fibre, so prints sit on an uneven ground and light inks look slightly translucent. Solid colours print cleaner. Screen printing suits bold limited-colour designs at volume, DTF handles detailed full-colour work with no per-colour setup and is often better on shorter runs, and DTG gives a soft finish on cotton.
