Cruise Shirts and Family Vacation Shirts: A Planning Guide
By The Velocity Wear Team
Cruise shirts get about twenty-nine hundred US searches a month, and family vacation shirts another sixteen hundred. Multi-generation cruises, beach house weeks and big family trips are perfect for matching shirts. They help you spot your group in a port, at a buffet, or in a crowd of four thousand passengers.
Design ideas
- Family name plus the ship and year: The Garcias at Sea 2027.
- A retro travel-poster graphic of your destination.
- Roles on the back: Captain (Grandpa), First Mate, Snack Coordinator.
- An itinerary on the back, like a tour shirt listing each port.
- A milestone: 50th anniversary cruise, 60th birthday voyage.
Plan which day you'll wear them
Pick a specific day, like embarkation day, a sea day or the first port, and tell everyone. That's when you'll get the big group photo. Some families do two designs for two days, but remember each design has its own minimum.
Choose shirts for the heat
Caribbean and Mexican cruises are hot and humid. A lightweight, soft cotton tee, around 4.5 to 5 oz, is most comfortable. Light and bright colors stay cooler than black. Pre-wash shirts once before the trip to soften them.
Sizing every generation
Collect sizes from each household using a shared form. Kids may grow between ordering and sailing, so size up for little ones. Offer a relaxed fit for older relatives. Our minimum is 20 per design with youth and adult sizes mixed, which most big family groups reach.
Money and logistics
Decide who pays and collect money before ordering. Have shirts packed by household so everyone packs their own. Nobody wants to carry thirty shirts through a cruise terminal.
Check the cruise line's rules
Cruise lines generally welcome matching group shirts on casual days, but check dress codes for formal nights and specialty restaurants. And avoid using a cruise line's logos or trademarks on your design without permission. A generic ship graphic is safer.
Timeline
Production takes 10 to 15 working days after artwork approval, plus shipping. Start collecting sizes six to eight weeks before departure. Spring break and summer are peak travel seasons.
Beach house and road trip versions
Not cruising? The same ideas work for a beach house week, a national park road trip or a theme park vacation. Put the destination and year on the front and everyone's names or roles on the back. For theme parks, avoid using park characters or logos, since those are trademarked. Your family name and a fun location graphic are better.
Keepsake value
Vacation shirts become the photo on the fridge and the shirt kids wear to bed for years. A good-quality soft tee makes that more likely. It's worth spending a dollar or two more per shirt for a nicer blank on a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Group cruises and destination events
Group cruises for reunions, church groups and milestone birthdays often include a themed shirt for a sail-away party. Coordinate with the group organizer and cruise line's group coordinator.
Kids on vacation
Bright shirts help parents spot kids in busy ports and parks.
Proofs
Check family names, the ship or destination, and dates carefully before approving.
Order timing
Allow production plus shipping, and aim to have shirts at home two weeks before departure.
