Embroider an event cap when the mark is a logo or a short wordmark, which covers most crew kit. Print or sublimate it when the artwork is photographic, gradient-heavy or needs to run across a panel seam. The cap front is small and often curved, so the method is decided by the artwork and the blank together, and that decision is easier made before the design is finished than after.

Which decoration suits a cap front?

Embroidery is the default for headwear and for good reason: it sits well on a structured front, it survives a festival weekend, and it reads as finished rather than applied. It has limits. Very fine lines and small text disappear into the stitching, and a design with a lot of detail becomes a dense, heavy panel that stiffens the cap. If a logo only works at poster size, it will not work embroidered on a cap front.

DTF and screen printing handle flat colour and finer detail, and sublimation opens up full-panel graphics on suitable blanks. 3D puff raises the stitching for a bolder, more streetwear-leaning look that suits merch caps more than staff ones. The methods we run are listed on the wholesale caps page.

How does the cap style change the options?

A lot. A structured six panel has a firm front that takes embroidery cleanly but carries a centre seam that artwork has to work around. A five panel gives you an unbroken front, which is the easier canvas for a wide logo. A foam-front trucker is the natural home for a printed patch. An unstructured dad cap is soft, so heavy stitching can pull it out of shape.

A soft unstructured front — light stitching suits it better than a dense badge.

This is why the blank and the artwork should be chosen in the same conversation. Picking a dad cap because it looks right and then trying to put a dense crest on it is a common way to end up disappointed by a sample. The centre-seam question specifically is covered in 5-panel vs 6-panel caps: which to choose.

Does decoration change what an event cap costs?

The method matters less than the number of positions. One front decoration is what the entry price assumes; a side panel or a rear position is an addition on every cap in the run. Embroidery also carries a one-off digitising charge per design, which does not repeat when you reorder the same cap for next year. Our events and festivals page sits alongside the rest of the event kit decisions.

For a crew cap, one front position in one or two colours is usually the right answer, because the cap has to be recognised across a field rather than admired at arm’s length. Save the multi-position treatment for merch, where someone is looking at it closely before deciding whether to buy.

How should the artwork be supplied?

Vector, at the size it will actually appear. A logo drawn for a website header and scaled down to a cap front loses the detail that made it work, and rebuilding it is a step that takes days rather than minutes when an event date is close. Send the colour references at the same time rather than after the layout is approved.

Then look at it small. Print the artwork at the real decoration size, hold it at arm’s length, and see whether it still reads. That five-minute check catches more problems than any amount of on-screen review, and it is free. The timing consequences of getting it wrong are in caps for events: lead time.

Where caps sit alongside other branded kit, keep the decoration approach consistent across the set. A cap embroidered in one interpretation of the logo next to a tee printed in another reads as two organisations rather than one, and at an event that undercuts exactly the recognition the kit exists to create. Agreeing a single treatment and applying it everywhere is easier than reconciling several afterwards, and the artwork files approved for the caps are then usable for whatever gets added to the order later.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about caps — answered.

Yes, but they are separate designs, so each one carries its own fifty-piece minimum and its own setup. Keeping the method the same across both keeps production simpler even when the artwork differs.

Thread comes in set shades, so the match is close rather than absolute. Where a brand colour is critical, raise it at the quote stage so the nearest thread can be confirmed before anything is approved.

On a six panel the centre seam interrupts anything crossing it, which is why wide artwork generally goes on a five panel or a foam-front trucker instead. It is a blank choice more than a decoration one.

It is a different process with its own setup, so price it specifically rather than assuming it matches flat embroidery. It suits bold, simple shapes and does not improve a detailed design.
