Why Does My Logo Look Blurry When Printed?

Nine times out of ten it is the file, not the press. A logo saved for a website or lifted from a slide deck carries enough detail for a screen and nowhere near enough for a chest print, so the printer is faithfully enlarging a small image. The fix is a vector file, or a raster file built at the actual finished print size.

The File Was Built for a Screen

Screens are forgiving. A logo 400 pixels wide looks crisp in a browser because it is being displayed at roughly the size it was made for. Stretch that same file across a 250mm print and every pixel is being blown up several times over. Edges that looked clean turn into soft steps, and JPEG compression that was invisible online shows up as grey haze around the letterforms. Saving a logo off your own website is the most common cause of a disappointing proof.

Vector Is a Format, Not a Guarantee

People often send a PDF and assume the resolution question is settled. It is not. A PDF is a container, and it will hold a photograph of a logo just as happily as it holds genuine vector paths. The same is true of an EPS or an AI file with a placed image inside it. There is a quick test: open the file and zoom to 800 per cent. Real vector edges stay razor sharp at any magnification, while a placed image goes blocky. While you are in there, check that fonts have been converted to outlines, because a live font that is not installed at the other end will quietly substitute for something else.

What Counts as Enough Resolution

The rule is 300 dpi at the finished print size, not at whatever size the file happens to open. A 250mm wide print at 300 dpi is roughly 2,950 pixels across. Taking a 600 pixel logo and typing a bigger number into the export box does not create that detail, it interpolates it, and upscaling tools invent edges that were never in the original. Set your document to the real print dimensions in millimetres, view it at 100 per cent, and look hard at the thinnest part of the mark. That is what will land on the garment.

  • A vector file (.ai, .eps or a vector PDF) with all fonts converted to outlines, so nothing substitutes to a different typeface.
  • A one-colour version, because screen printing charges setup per colour and a four-colour logo often does not need to be four colours.
  • Brand colour references, Pantone where you have them, rather than a description like 'our blue'.
  • The garment colour you intend to print on, since a logo containing white behaves completely differently on white and on navy.
  • If raster artwork is all you have, the largest original anyone can find, not the copy already resized for a website.

When the File Is Fine and the Print Still Looks Soft

Sometimes the artwork is perfect and the garment is the variable. Ink sits on top of a smooth jersey tee and sinks into the pile of a brushed fleece hoodie. Fine lines and small serif text that print beautifully on a lightweight tee lose definition on heavy fleece, on ribbed knit and on anything with a pronounced texture. DTF handles detail well, but very fine hairlines can still soften at the edge. If your design lives mainly on hoodies and sweatshirts, build it bolder than you would for tees. That is a design decision rather than a printing fault.

Blurry Embroidery Is a Different Beast Entirely

Resolution has nothing to do with it. A needle and a thread have a physical minimum, so text under roughly 5mm tall fills in, thin strokes disappear into the fabric, and gradients cannot exist at all. If your embroidered logo looks fuzzy, sending a higher resolution file changes nothing. What you need is a simplified version drawn for stitch: fewer elements, thicker strokes, larger type, and detail removed rather than shrunk. Good digitising rescues a lot, but it cannot stitch anything finer than the thread.

If the Original File Has Vanished

This happens constantly, usually after a freelancer moves on or a laptop dies. The answer is to have the logo redrawn as vector once, properly, rather than fighting soft edges on every order for the next five years. Any competent designer can trace a clean flat version in a short session. Ask for the editable source file rather than just the export, and store it somewhere that is not one person's desktop.
