What Tolerance Means in Garment Measurements

Tolerance is the accepted range of variation between garments that carry the same size label. It exists because fabric is a soft, stretchy, breathing material that is cut in stacked layers and sewn by people, so two mediums off the same production line will differ slightly. That is normal manufacture rather than a fault, and it is written into the specification before a single garment is cut.

Fabric Is Not Sheet Metal

Start with where the variation comes from, because that makes the rest obvious. Knitted fabric relaxes and recovers. It is delivered on a roll under tension, it sits for a while, and it settles. Cutting happens through a stack of many plies, and the plies at the bottom behave slightly differently to the ones on top. Sewing adds its own variation through seam allowance and stitch tension. Then the finished garment is washed or steamed, and it moves again.

None of those steps can be eliminated. They can only be controlled to within a range, and that range is the tolerance. A woven shirt is more dimensionally stable than a jersey tee, so it carries a tighter tolerance. A heavyweight loopback hoodie carries a looser one.

How Tolerance Is Written Down

On a proper specification sheet, every measurement point has a target figure and a plus or minus allowance beside it. Chest, body length, sleeve length, shoulder width, neck opening and hem width each get their own. The allowances are not identical, and they should not be: longer measurements accumulate more variation than short ones, so body length usually carries a wider allowance than neck width.

The garment passes if every point falls inside its band. What quality control is really watching for is not a single garment at the edge of tolerance, but a whole batch sitting consistently at one edge, which is the signature of a pattern or cutting problem rather than ordinary variation.

When a Difference Is Actually a Fault

This is the part buyers most need. Not every variation is acceptable, and knowing the difference stops you either complaining about nothing or accepting something you should not.

  • Two garments of the same size differing by a small amount on chest or length is tolerance, and it is expected.
  • One garment where the left sleeve and right sleeve differ noticeably from each other is asymmetry, and that is a fault regardless of tolerance.
  • A whole batch measuring consistently smaller than the published chart is a spec problem, not variation, because true variation scatters either side of the target.
  • A garment that measured correctly and then shrank beyond the stated allowance after a first wash is a finishing or fabric issue.
  • Twisting at the side seam after washing points to fabric torque rather than measurement, and no tolerance covers it.

Why This Matters More on Bulk Orders

On a single garment, tolerance is invisible. Nobody measures the hoodie they bought. On a uniform rollout it becomes visible, because garments get worn side by side and compared. Two colleagues in the same size standing next to each other will spot a length difference that neither would ever have noticed alone.

There is a second, sneakier effect. If you re-order the same garment a year later, the new run will sit somewhere else inside the tolerance band. Both runs are correct. They still may not look identical hanging next to each other. Anyone running a long-lived uniform programme should expect this and should keep a reference garment from the original run so that any conversation with a supplier is about a physical object rather than a memory.

Tolerance and Decoration Placement

Decoration has its own tolerance, and it is separate from the garment's. A print or an embroidery is positioned by an operator against a marked reference, and there is an accepted allowance on that position too. The two tolerances stack. A garment sitting at the short end of its length band with a print sitting at the low end of its placement band will look lower on the chest than a garment where both landed the other way.

You can reduce the visible effect. Placements measured from the shoulder seam are steadier than placements measured from the hem. Designs with a lot of clear space around them absorb a few millimetres of movement without anyone noticing. Designs that are supposed to line up with a pocket edge or a placket are the ones that punish variation, so if your artwork depends on alignment with another feature, say so explicitly at the briefing stage.

What to Ask a Supplier

Ask for the size chart in centimetres, ask whether the figures are finished garment or body measurements, and ask what tolerance applies. A supplier who can answer all three has a specification. Then order a sample, measure it yourself, and wash it. The sample is your reference point for everything that follows.
