What Is the Best Method for a Photo Print?

For a photographic image on a garment, DTF is usually the most dependable choice: it reproduces full colour, carries its own white backing layer so it works on dark fabric, and runs on cotton, blends and polyester without screens or setup. DTG is softer and can be excellent on light cotton, and sublimation gives the finest photographic reproduction of all but only on white or light polyester. Screen printing a photograph is possible through halftones and simulated process, but it is specialist, expensive to set up and only sensible at high volume.

Why Photographs Are Hard on Fabric

A photograph carries thousands of subtle tonal transitions, and fabric is a poor surface for holding them. The weave breaks up smooth gradients, the fibres absorb ink unevenly, and the garment colour influences everything printed on it. On top of that, a print on cloth is viewed in daylight, on a moving body, from several feet away rather than at arm's length under a lamp.

So the goal is not to match the screen image. It is to produce something that reads well as a garment. Images with clear subjects, strong contrast and a defined focal point translate; busy images with delicate mid-tone detail rarely do, whichever method you choose.

DTF: the Default Answer

DTF prints the image onto a film with a white layer behind it, then transfers the whole thing in one press. Because the white is built in, colour stays true on black just as it does on white. It works across cotton, blends and polyester, so you are not restricted in garment choice, and there is no per-colour setup, which makes it viable from small quantities.

The trade is hand feel. A large photographic DTF print is a substantial area of transfer sitting on the fabric, and you will feel it. On a chest-sized image that is a non-issue. Across a full back panel it is a real consideration for a garment someone wears all day.

DTG: Softest, But Cotton Only

DTG lays ink directly into the fibres, so a well-executed print feels closer to part of the garment than a layer on top of it. On light-coloured, high-quality combed cotton it can look genuinely beautiful, with soft transitions and no perceptible edge to the print.

The limits are firm. It is cotton only, so blends and polyester are out. On dark garments it needs a pretreatment and a white base, which adds cost and slightly firms the feel. And because ink sits in the weave, fabric quality matters more than with any other method: a coarse blank will soften the detail no matter how good the file is.

Sublimation: the Best Reproduction, the Narrowest Window

Sublimation turns dye into gas that bonds into polyester fibres, leaving no surface layer at all. There is nothing to feel and nothing to crack, and the colour reproduction is the truest of any garment method. It is what all-over sports kit and full-panel designs are made with.

But it only works on polyester, and only on white or light bases, because it adds dye rather than covering what is underneath. It cannot print white, so on a dark garment it does nothing useful. Complex sublimation work also sits at the longer end of lead times, nearer 15 to 20 working days from artwork approval.

Screen Printing a Photograph

It can be done. Halftone screens break tones into dots, and simulated process separates an image into a set of spot colours plus a white base, often six to ten screens. In skilled hands the results are outstanding and unmistakably screen printed.

It is also the most expensive route to start, since every one of those screens carries its own setup, and the separation work itself is a specialist job. It only makes financial sense on large runs where the setup spreads across hundreds of garments. For most photographic jobs, particularly at our 20-piece minimum, DTF answers the same question with none of the tooling.

Preparing the Image

  • Work from the original file, not a screenshot, a social media download or something pulled off a website.
  • Check resolution at final print size rather than in the abstract. An image that looks sharp on a phone can be nowhere near large enough at 30 cm wide.
  • Decide the edge deliberately: a clean cut-out, a soft fade or a defined shape all read better than an accidental rectangle.
  • Lift contrast slightly, and be wary of very dark shadow detail, which tends to fill in and disappear on fabric.
  • Make sure you actually have the rights to use the image, especially where people or third-party work appear in it.

Dark Garments Change the Colours

Any photographic print on a dark garment is being printed over a white base, and white bases are not neutral in effect. Colours can read slightly cooler or flatter than the same image on a white garment, and very light tones in the image can end up looking like the base itself rather than part of the picture.

If the image has large pale areas, look carefully at how those edges will resolve against a black garment. Sometimes the better answer is a deliberate cut-out shape or a framed panel rather than a fade to nothing that will show as a faint white ghost.
