What Happens If My Artwork Is Low Resolution?

We tell you before anything is printed. A low-resolution file usually means soft edges, visible stepping on curves and mushy small text at the size you want it. Depending on the file, the fix is one of three things: we rebuild it as vector, we print it smaller where it still holds up, or we ask you for a better source. Nothing goes into production looking wrong without a conversation first.
Resolution Only Means Anything at a Stated Size
A file is not high or low resolution in the abstract. It is high or low at a particular printed size. The working target for print is around 300 DPI at the final dimensions, which means a logo 500 pixels wide is comfortable at 40mm and falls apart at 250mm. This is why files that look perfectly sharp on screen disappoint on a shirt: a typical web image is built for roughly 72 pixels per inch of screen, and printing that at the same physical size gives you about a quarter of the detail you need. Always ask the resolution question with a size attached.
Vector Files Make the Problem Disappear Permanently
Vector artwork stores shapes as mathematical paths rather than a grid of pixels, so it can be scaled to any size with no loss at all. AI, EPS, SVG and vector PDF are the formats to look for. If you have your logo as vector, resolution stops being a topic forever, for every supplier, on every product from a business card to a van. Raster formats such as PNG, JPG, TIFF and PSD are made of pixels and are therefore tied to a size. They can be perfectly usable, provided they were made large enough for the job in the first place.
Where Bad Files Come From
The pattern is remarkably consistent. Someone drags the logo off the company website, which was deliberately compressed for page speed. Someone crops it out of an email signature, which is smaller still. Someone exports a page of a PDF as an image rather than pulling the vector out of it. Someone photographs a printed sign, which brings perspective distortion and paper texture along with it. Or a JPEG has been opened, edited and re-saved half a dozen times, and each save has added compression artefacts, so the edges now carry a faint halo of noise that will print.
Why Upscaling Does Not Rescue It
Enlarging an image adds pixels but cannot add information, because the information was never captured. Traditional upscaling produces a bigger, blurrier version. AI upscalers do something more dangerous: they invent plausible detail. For a photograph, that is often fine. For a logo, it is a serious problem, because the tool guesses at letterforms and edges and quietly reshapes your brand mark into something that looks nearly right. Nearly right is worse than obviously wrong, because it gets approved. Redrawing beats upscaling every time.
Each Decoration Method Has a Different Tolerance
Screen printing is the least forgiving. Colours have to be separated into individual screens, and separation depends on clean, crisp edges, so a soft, noisy file produces ragged results. DTG and DTF reproduce what you give them faithfully, which means pixelation and JPEG artefacts print exactly as they appear on screen. Embroidery is the odd one out and is far more tolerant, because your artwork is not printed at all. A digitiser rebuilds it as a stitch path, so a lower-resolution image can still serve as a usable reference, provided the shapes are unambiguous. Vinyl needs a clean outline to cut, so it wants vector or something that can be traced cleanly.
What a Redraw Can and Cannot Do
Redrawing means rebuilding your logo as vector paths from whatever reference exists. It works when the shapes are legible enough to be interpreted with confidence. It gets harder when the type is a custom or heavily modified typeface that has to be identified or drawn from scratch, when a gradient or texture has to be reconstructed, or when the only reference is so degraded that the redraw becomes an educated guess. There is also a question that is not technical at all: if the logo was made by a designer or agency, they will normally hold the vector, and asking them for it is faster and more accurate than anyone rebuilding it.
The Habit Worth Building: Keep a Print Pack
Once you have a proper vector logo, do not let it get lost in an email thread. Keep one folder that holds the vector master, a mono and a reversed version for dark garments, high-resolution PNGs at a couple of sizes, your Pantone or thread colour references, and a note of the minimum size the logo should ever be used at. Send that folder to every supplier. It takes an hour to assemble and it removes this entire category of problem from every future order, including reorders where matching the original matters.
- Vector first: AI, EPS, SVG or a true vector PDF solves it permanently.
- Otherwise a PNG or TIFF sized for roughly 300 DPI at the finished print dimensions.
- Transparent background rather than a white box, especially on coloured garments.
- Colour references, Pantone for print or thread numbers for embroidery.
- The finished size you want it printed at, in millimetres, so the file can be judged against it.
