Understanding Yarn Count in Fabric

Yarn count is a number describing how fine the yarn is. In the cotton system, written as Ne or just as 20s, 30s and 40s, a higher number means a finer yarn: 30s is thinner than 20s. Finer yarn generally gives a smoother, lighter, more refined fabric, while coarser yarn gives a heavier, more rugged one. Count on its own does not tell you the fabric weight, so always read it next to the GSM.
Why a Bigger Number Means a Thinner Yarn
The cotton count system measures length per unit of weight rather than thickness. It asks how many fixed-length hanks of this yarn you get from one pound. A fine yarn packs more length into that pound, so the number climbs. A thick yarn uses up the pound quickly, so the number stays low.
Once you know that, the whole system stops being confusing. It is an indirect measure, which is also why it runs opposite to the systems used for synthetic filament yarns.
Singles, Plies and the Slash
You will often see counts written with a slash: 30/1 or 20/2. The second number is the number of strands twisted together. A 30/1 is a single yarn of count 30, which is what most jersey t-shirts are knitted from. A 20/2 is two 20s yarns plied together, giving a thicker, rounder, more even yarn than a single of similar weight.
Plied yarns are stronger and less hairy, which is why they turn up in better polos and in woven shirting rather than in budget tees. If a spec says 30s and nothing else, assume singles.
Count and GSM Answer Different Questions
This is where buyers most often go wrong. Count describes the yarn. GSM describes the finished fabric. You can knit a fine 40s yarn very densely and end up with a heavy fabric, or knit a coarse 20s loosely and end up with a light one. Two fabrics at identical GSM can feel completely unalike because one is built from many fine yarns packed tightly and the other from fewer thick yarns knitted open.
The tightly knitted fine-yarn version will feel smoother, look more refined and be more opaque. The coarse open version will feel more textured and more casual. Both may be perfectly good garments. They are simply not the same product, and a GSM figure alone will never tell you which one you are being offered.
Rough Guide to What the Numbers Feel Like
Approximate territory, since finishing and knit density shift everything.
- 16s to 20s: chunky and rugged. Heavyweight boxy tees, workwear, sweatshirt bodies. Texture you can see across a room.
- 24s to 26s: the sturdy middle ground for a solid everyday tee that still feels substantial rather than fine.
- 30s: the workhorse count for standard quality t-shirt jersey. Smooth enough to print cleanly, robust enough to last.
- 40s and above: fine, smooth and light, used for fashion-fit and premium retail tees. Lovely hand, less abrasion resistance, more risk of transparency in pale shades.
- Plied counts such as 20/2 or 30/2: rounder and stronger yarns used where evenness matters, typically better polos and woven shirts.

The Polyester Trap
Synthetic filament yarns are measured in denier or dtex, and those are direct systems: a higher number means a thicker yarn. So 150D polyester is heavier than 75D, which is the exact opposite of how 30s and 20s cotton behave.
This catches people out when comparing a cotton tee spec against a polyester sports top spec on the same page. The two numbers look like they belong to the same scale and they do not. If a spec mixes systems, read the unit, not just the digit.
What Finer Yarn Buys and What It Costs
Finer yarn gives a smoother surface, better drape, a more premium hand and a cleaner print surface, since there is less texture for fine detail to fall into. It usually costs more per kilo because it demands better, longer fibre and more careful preparation, typically combed rather than carded.
What you give up is toughness. A fine yarn has less material resisting abrasion, so a very high count tee will show wear at the collar and cuffs sooner than a 20s one, and it will be more prone to transparency in white and pale shades. For staff uniform doing real work, a mid count is often the smarter buy than the finest one available.
How to Use This When Ordering
Ask for count alongside GSM and composition, and treat a spec that gives only GSM as incomplete. If you are matching a garment you already like, the count is the number that gets you closest to the same character; GSM alone will get you somewhere in the region.
