Understanding Fabric Weight Versus Thickness

Weight and thickness are not the same property. GSM measures how many grams of fibre sit in a square metre of fabric; thickness measures how far that fabric stands off a flat surface. A tightly packed thin fabric can easily weigh more than an airy, lofty thick one, which is why two garments quoted at the same GSM can feel entirely different in the hand. GSM tells you how much material is there, not how it has been arranged.
What GSM Actually Counts
Grams per square metre is a mass measurement and nothing more. It is genuinely useful, because within one fabric type and construction it is a reliable proxy for substance. A 180 GSM jersey tee has more cotton in it than a 140 GSM one, and it will feel and wear like it. That comparison holds because everything else about the two fabrics is broadly similar.
The comparison breaks the moment you cross construction types. Compare a 280 GSM brushed fleece against a 280 GSM tightly knitted interlock and the numbers match while the fabrics have almost nothing in common. One is fluffy and insulating, the other is dense and smooth. GSM cannot tell them apart.
Density and Loft, the Two Missing Variables
Density is how tightly the fibres are packed into the space they occupy. Loft is how much air is trapped in that space. They pull in opposite directions. A dense fabric is heavy for its thickness, feels smooth and solid, drapes well and resists snagging. A lofty fabric is thick for its weight, feels soft and warm, and compresses when you squeeze it.
Brushing changes loft dramatically without adding a single gram. Brushed back fleece is the obvious case: the process raises fibres on the inside face, so the fabric becomes thicker, softer and warmer while its GSM stays exactly the same. That is why a brushed 280 GSM sweatshirt can feel more substantial than an unbrushed 300 GSM one.
Yarn Structure Matters As Much As Mass
How the yarn itself was made shapes the result before knitting even begins. Combed cotton has the short fibres removed, so the yarn is smoother, stronger and pills less. Ring-spun yarn is twisted continuously, producing a softer, finer hand than open-end yarn of the same weight. Both processes cost more and neither shows up in a GSM figure.
This is where the cheap heavyweight tee comes from. It is easy to hit an impressive GSM using coarse, cheaply spun yarn, and the result is a garment that is heavy, stiff and slightly rough. A lighter tee in combed ring-spun cotton will often feel better and last longer despite the smaller number on the spec sheet.

Comparing Fabrics Sensibly
You can still use GSM well, provided you use it as one input rather than a verdict.
- Compare GSM only within the same construction: jersey against jersey, fleece against fleece, never one against the other.
- Ask whether a sweatshirt fabric is brushed, because brushing changes how it feels and insulates without changing its weight at all.
- Look for combed and ring-spun in the description, since both indicate yarn quality that GSM cannot express.
- Hold the fabric to a light source; an open, gappy knit at a high GSM usually means coarse yarn rather than substance.
- Squeeze a fold between finger and thumb. Fabric that compresses to almost nothing is lofty, while fabric that stays firm is dense.
What This Means for Printing
Surface texture drives print quality more than weight does. A smooth, dense fabric holds fine detail cleanly because the ink sits on an even surface. A lofty, brushed or heavily textured fabric scatters detail, since the raised fibres break up thin lines and small text.
If your artwork has fine linework or small lettering, favour a smoother fabric even if it weighs less. Bold, simple graphics are far more forgiving and sit happily on textured fleece. It is also worth remembering that a heavier garment is not automatically a better print surface; sometimes it is simply a rougher one.
Choosing Weight for the Job
Match weight to use rather than reaching for the highest number available. Lighter jersey suits event tees, summer merchandise and anything worn under something else, and it is genuinely the right choice there rather than a compromise. Mid weights are the workhorse for retail tees and everyday staff shirts. Heavier fabrics belong on garments that need to feel like a considered purchase, such as premium hoodies and merchandise people are paying real money for.
There is a comfort ceiling too. A very heavy hoodie is superb outdoors in January and unbearable in a warm office, so a uniform programme covering both situations is usually better served by two weights than by one heavy compromise.
