Understanding Colour Gamut on Fabric

Colour gamut is the range of colours a given process can actually produce. A screen emits light and can display colours that no ink on fabric can reflect, particularly bright saturated ones. That is why a design that glows on a monitor comes back looking calmer in cloth, and why a digital mockup should be treated as a layout tool rather than a colour proof.
Emitted Light Against Reflected Light
A monitor makes colour by emitting light from its own source. Turn the brightness up in a dim room and a saturated blue is almost luminous. Fabric has no light source. It can only absorb some of the light landing on it and reflect the rest back at you, which puts a hard ceiling on how bright and how saturated any printed colour can be. No ink chemistry gets around that. It is the difference between a torch and a wall.
Where the Gap Is Widest
The gap is not uniform, which is what confuses people. Muted colours, earth tones, mid greys, navies and most brand blues translate very closely, because they sit comfortably inside what ink can do. The problems cluster at the extremes: electric blues, vivid cyans, neon greens, hot pinks and the brightest oranges. Those are precisely the colours a screen renders most convincingly and ink reproduces least well, so the disappointment lands exactly where the expectation was highest.
The Garment Underneath Is Part of the Colour
Ink is rarely fully opaque, so what sits beneath it contributes. A yellow printed straight onto a navy tee is a different yellow to the same ink on white. On a dark garment a white underbase is used to restore brightness, but the underbase itself changes the final result, and it is another layer of film on the garment. Heather and marl fabrics complicate it further, because the fabric is a blend of light and dark fibres and prints onto it pick up that texture in the colour as well as the surface.
- Monitor calibration and brightness, which vary hugely between a phone, a laptop and a studio display.
- The garment colour showing through, since few inks are completely opaque on their own.
- Ink opacity and deposit, because the same colour laid on more thickly reads differently.
- Fabric texture, since a rough or brushed surface scatters light and slightly dulls what you see.
- The lighting the garment is viewed under, which can make two colours match under daylight and disagree under shop lighting.
Why Mockups Mislead, and What They Are Still Good For
A digital mockup shows you position, scale, proportion and balance, and those are genuinely worth checking. What it cannot do is promise a colour, because it is showing you emitted light standing in for reflected light. Pantone, and What It Can and Cannot Promise
Supplying a Pantone reference is still the single most useful thing you can do, because it removes the ambiguity of a screenshot or a hex code interpreted through someone else's monitor. But be clear about what a reference gives you. Pantone systems for coated paper and for textiles are different things, and ink on cloth behaves differently from ink on a smooth coated sheet. A good printer will get you close and consistent across a run. Expect close and consistent, not identical.
Designing Inside the Gamut Instead of Fighting It
The practical move is to design for reflected light from the start. If a brand hangs on one very bright colour, consider whether contrast can do the work that saturation was doing, since a bright shade against a dark garment reads as vivid even when the ink itself is not extreme. Avoid building a design where the whole effect depends on a single neon that ink cannot reach. And remember that a colour which looks slightly flat on a screen often looks confident in cloth, because your eye judges it against the room rather than against a backlit display.

Checking Colour Before You Commit to a Run
If colour is critical, look at it on the actual fabric before the full run, and look at it in more than one light. Daylight near a window and the artificial light of the venue or shop where the garments will be seen are the two that matter most. Two colours can match perfectly under one and visibly disagree under the other, which catches out anyone who has only checked under office strip lights.
