T-Shirt Printing UK: What Buyers Should Know in 2026
By The Velocity Wear Team
Over eighteen thousand people search for t-shirt printing in the UK every month. They're ordering for football teams, hen dos, charity runs, bands, cafés and new clothing labels. And a lot of them end up comparing quotes that aren't really comparable, because one is for a thin promo tee with a small print and the other is for a heavyweight shirt with a full back design. Here's how to see the difference.
Start with the shirt, not the print
A great print on a flimsy tee still looks cheap. T-shirt fabric is measured in GSM, grams per square metre. Our tees are combed ring-spun cotton from 150 to 240 GSM.
- Around 150 to 170 GSM: lightweight and soft. Good for events, runs, and hot weather.
- Around 180 to 200 GSM: the everyday midweight most people picture.
- Around 220 to 240 GSM: heavyweight. More structure, a premium feel, great for brands.
Combed ring-spun cotton is smoother and softer than basic carded cotton, and it prints more cleanly. That's worth asking about when comparing quotes.
The main print methods
- Screen printing: vivid, durable and cheapest per shirt at volume for designs in a few colours.
- DTF: full colour and photographic detail with no per-colour setup. Brilliant for smaller runs and complex artwork.
- Embroidery: premium and long-lasting for small logos, especially on polos and heavier tees.
- Puff print: raised, textured lettering for a streetwear look.
There's a side-by-side comparison in our printing methods guide.
How to compare quotes properly
Ask every printer the same questions, in writing:
- 1What's the shirt: GSM, cotton type, fit?
- 2Which print method, and how many colours and positions?
- 3What size is the print?
- 4Are setup costs included?
- 5How long from artwork approval, and is delivery included?
A quote that's much cheaper is usually cheaper for a reason. Often it's the shirt.
Artwork that prints well
Send vector files if you have them: AI, EPS, SVG or PDF. Otherwise a high-resolution PNG at the actual print size with a transparent background. Avoid screenshots and images saved from social media. They look fine on a phone and soft on a chest.
Costs and quantities
Our tees start from $13 each at 20 pieces with one standard print, and the price per shirt drops at 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000. The price calculator shows totals in pounds so you're not converting in your head.
Lead times
Production takes 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval, then delivery. If you've got a fixed date, like a race, festival or wedding weekend, work backwards and add a week of breathing room.
Ordering for different occasions
- Charity runs: light, bright tees with the event on the back.
- Staff uniforms: midweight tees with a chest logo.
- Brand merch: heavyweight tees with a strong design.
- Stag and hen weekends: fun designs with names.
- Festivals and gigs: bold designs that sell on the night.
Match the shirt and print method to the occasion and the quote will make more sense.
Local printer or online supplier?
A local printer is great when you need a handful of shirts fast or want to pop in and see samples. An online supplier often wins on price per shirt for bigger runs, on shirt quality options, and on extras like custom labels and packaging. Plenty of people use both for different jobs.
