Sublimation vs DTF for Sportswear: Which Wins Where

Sublimation wins for polyester kit in light bases where you want all-over print, edge-to-edge colour and no print you can feel. DTF wins for dark kit, mixed fabrics, short runs, late squad changes and anything with names and numbers. The choice is really a fabric and colour question first, and a design question second.
How Each Method Puts Colour on the Garment
Sublimation is a dye process. Under heat the dye turns to gas and bonds into polyester fibres, colouring the fabric itself. Nothing sits on top. Run your hand over a sublimated shirt and you cannot find the print, because there is no print layer to find. It cannot crack, peel or wash off, because there is nothing there to detach.
DTF is a transfer process. The design is printed onto film, including its own white ink layer, then heat-pressed onto the garment where it bonds as a thin flexible sheet. You can feel it. It works across cotton, blends and polyester, on any garment colour, and it needs no screens or setup per colour.
The Two Hard Limits of Sublimation
First, polyester only. Sublimation dye has nothing to bond with on cotton. On a poly-cotton blend you get a washed, faded version of your colours, because only the polyester content takes the dye. If your team wants cotton training tees, sublimation is off the table entirely.
Second, light bases only. There is no white in sublimation, and the dye is translucent, so the garment colour is your lightest tone. On white you get full colour. On a light grey everything picks up a grey cast. On navy or black you get nothing usable at all. Any dark area in a sublimated design has to be printed as dark ink onto a light base, not achieved by using a dark garment.
What DTF Buys You in Return
DTF ignores both of those limits. Black polyester, cotton training tops, poly-cotton hoodies, softshells: it goes on all of them, and the white ink in the transfer means colours stay accurate on dark kit. There is no per-colour setup, so a full-colour crest costs no more to set up than a single-colour one, which matters enormously on a squad of twenty rather than a club of two hundred.
It is also the pragmatic choice when kit is already made. Sublimating a finished garment is possible, but the interesting version of sublimation involves printing fabric panels before the garment is cut and sewn.
The Cut-and-Sew Advantage People Miss
Here is the part that separates properly sublimated kit from everything else. When panels are printed flat and then sewn, the design runs across seams without interruption. Stripes line up around the body. A pattern continues into the sleeve. Colour reaches the underarm and the side seam, which no press can do on a made-up garment.
Printing a finished garment stops wherever the press cannot reach flat: seams, underarms, collars and hems. If your design depends on continuous coverage, it needs deciding before manufacture, not after. That is a lead-time decision as much as a design one.
Hand-Feel, Breathability and Stretch
For performance kit, this is the argument that matters most. Sublimated fabric breathes exactly as it did before printing, because the structure is unchanged. Wicking still works across the whole garment, including under a large block of colour.
A large solid DTF area behaves like a patch of film across the fabric. On a small crest that is irrelevant. Across a full chest panel on a running vest, it is noticeably less breathable, and heavy repeated stretch across a big solid block puts more stress on the print than a compact logo ever will. Keep DTF designs on stretchy performance fabric reasonably contained and it holds up well.
Dye Migration: the Failure Nobody Expects
Worth knowing before you print anything light onto dark polyester. Polyester dye can move under heat, so the garment's own colour bleeds up into the print over the following days. The classic symptom is white or pale ink on a red or bright poly shirt slowly turning pink. It is a real risk on sportswear specifically, because sportswear is mostly polyester in strong colours.
It is manageable with the right film and press settings, but it is a question worth raising rather than discovering. If you are putting pale artwork on strongly coloured polyester, say so up front so the job is set up for it.
- White or light polyester, all-over design, no print feel wanted: sublimation.
- Dark kit, or any cotton and blend content: DTF, because sublimation simply will not work.
- Small squad, full-colour crest, tight budget on setup: DTF, since there is no per-colour charge.
- Names, numbers and late squad changes: DTF or vinyl, both of which handle per-item personalisation.
- Design that must cross seams and reach the underarm: sublimation, printed before cut and sew.
Lead Time and Order Size
Sublimated cut-and-sew kit takes longer, because the fabric is printed and the garment is then made. Expect timings nearer 15 to 20 working days from artwork approval for sublimation and complex jobs, against around 10 to 15 for screen printing and embroidery. Production starts at artwork approval, not at the moment you place the order, which is the detail that catches clubs out when a season start date is fixed.
Either route works from a 20-piece minimum per order with sizes mixed freely, so squad-sized runs are viable on both. The scheduling difference, not the minimum, is usually what decides it when a fixture list is involved.
