Sublimation Printing: Brilliant on Polyester, Useless on Cotton

Sublimation turns solid dye directly into gas under heat, which then bonds into polyester fibres and solidifies within them. The result is unique among decoration methods: the print is inside the fibre, so there is nothing on the surface at all — no hand feel, nothing to crack, nothing to peel.
The two absolute constraints
- 1**Polyester only.** The dye bonds with synthetic polymer. On cotton it has nothing to bond to and washes out. Blends work partially and fade in proportion to their cotton content, which produces a vintage look some brands use deliberately.
- 2**Light garments only.** Sublimation adds colour and cannot cover what is underneath. There is no white sublimation ink, because the process cannot deposit an opaque layer. On a black garment, nothing visible happens.
These are not limitations that can be worked around with better equipment. They are how the chemistry works.
What it does better than anything else
- **Zero hand feel.** Nothing sits on the fabric, so breathability and stretch are completely unaffected. This is why performance sportswear uses it.
- **Unlimited colour.** Photographic images, gradients and complex artwork at no extra cost.
- **True all-over printing.** Fabric can be printed before cutting, so the design runs edge to edge and across seams with no blank border.
- **Permanence.** The dye is within the fibre, so it will not crack, peel or wash off. It fades only as the fabric itself fades.
Cut-and-sew versus blank printing
There are two ways to do all-over sublimation, and they are very different products.
Printing a finished blank garment leaves unprinted areas at seams and under folds, because the press cannot reach into them. It is cheaper and suits designs that do not need edge-to-edge coverage.
Cut-and-sew prints flat fabric first, then cuts and sews the garment from it. Coverage is complete and the design can be positioned deliberately across panels. It costs more, has higher minimums, and is the only way to get a genuinely seamless all-over result.
Where it fits
Sports kit, cycling jerseys, esports and team apparel, performance base layers, and any polyester garment where a print with no hand feel matters. It is the standard for a reason in those categories.
For a cotton hoodie, a dark garment or a small logo on a mixed range, it is simply not the right tool — and a supplier steering you towards DTF or screen for those is answering the question correctly.
