To start a water bottle brand, begin with a private label test run: insulated steel bottles with your logo, from 50 pieces per design, split across a few colourways and packed in retail-ready cartons or a branded gift box. The run is made in 10 to 15 working days once the artwork is approved. Sell that first batch, learn which colour moves, then reorder the winners.
What is a private label water bottle?
A private label bottle is made by a manufacturer and sold under your brand. You do not design a steel body or tool a new shape; you start from an existing construction and make it yours with the finish, the print and the box. At Velocity Wear, that means an insulated stainless steel bottle that keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12, with a carry-handle, flip-straw or steel cap, or a tumbler with a handle and straw lid. Our custom bottles page shows the range, and our private label service explains how the arrangement works across products, apparel included.

How big should the first run be?
Small. The minimum is 50 pieces per design, and for a new brand that is a sensible test: enough to sell online and at a few markets, small enough that a slow colour does not sink you. Because colours can be mixed within one design, one logo across 50 bottles can cover three colourways, say 20 matte black, 15 navy and 15 olive, all with a white logo. That split tells you more than 50 of a single colour would.
Which colourways should a new bottle brand launch with?
Three is a good number: one neutral that sells steadily, one colour that carries the brand, and one that is a bit of a risk. Matte black is the usual neutral, a colour from navy, olive, red or pink can carry the identity, and wood finish or stainless steel gives a premium outlier. Choosing bottle colours sets out which logo colour reads on each finish.
| Decision | Options | What to think about |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Insulated bottle or handled tumbler | Bottles suit sport and outdoor lines; tumblers suit desk and car |
| Cap | Carry-handle, flip-straw or steel cap | One cap across the launch keeps stock simple |
| Colourways | Up to eight finishes | Three is enough to learn from a 50-piece run |
| Logo printed to a matte finish flush with the coat | One logo colour that reads on every finish you pick | |
| Packaging | Retail-ready cartons or a branded gift box | Where it will sell: shelf, online or as a gift |
| Reorder | A new run of 10–15 working days plus freight | Reorder before the best seller runs out |
What packaging does a retail bottle need?
It depends where it sells. For a shop shelf, a retail-ready carton that shows the brand and stacks neatly. For online orders and gifting, a branded gift box that makes the unboxing part of the product. Custom packaging runs from a branded gift box to retail-ready cartons and is proofed with the bottle artwork. Labels and packaging covers the wider packaging options if you also sell clothing.
What should you check before selling bottles?
Anything that goes to the public with your name on it becomes your responsibility as the seller, so a few checks are worth doing before launch.
- Hold a sample: £150 for one or two pieces, shipped worldwide and credited against the bulk order
- Only make the claims you can back: BPA free, leak-proof lid, cold for 24 hours and hot for 12
- Read food contact compliance for branded drinkware and check the rules for each market you sell into
- Write care instructions you are sure of, and do not promise dishwasher use
- Ask any stockist what they need on the packaging, such as a barcode, and raise it when you enquire
Selling bottles alongside clothing
For a clothing brand, a bottle is a natural first non-apparel product, because it carries the same logo into the gym and the office and can share the brand's colour palette and packaging style. The clothing brands page covers how the apparel side of a merch range comes together.
Briefing your first run
Send the logo, the colourways and how many of each, the cap, the packaging you want, your delivery country and your launch date through the enquiry form on this page. Velocity Wear replies with pricing, usually within hours on a working day, invoiced in GBP, USD, EUR, CAD, AED, SEK or DKK. The finishes are on the private label bottle range, and the main buyer's guide covers the rest of the order.
