Selling Your Own Apparel on Amazon: What Has to Be on the Garment

By The Velocity Wear Team

Amazon is a legitimate channel for a young apparel brand and it is unusually specific about physical preparation. Most of the surprises are not about the listing — they are about what has to be true of the garment sitting in a fulfilment centre, and almost all of them are cheaper to solve during production than after delivery.

Requirements change, so treat this as a list of what to check rather than a substitute for the current seller guidance. But the categories below have been stable for a long time.

Polybagging, and the warning on it

Apparel going into fulfilment generally has to be individually poly-bagged, and bags above a defined size have to carry a suffocation warning. The bag also has to be transparent enough that the item is identifiable, and sealed.

This is a factory-stage specification. Ask for individually bagged garments with a printed suffocation warning on the bag, and it happens as part of packing at no meaningful extra cost. Do it afterwards and it is a person, a box of bags and a weekend.

Barcodes on the item

Each unit needs a scannable barcode — either the manufacturer barcode or an Amazon-generated one, depending on how you are set up — and it has to be visible without opening the bag. Practically, that means a label applied to the outside of the polybag, or a hang tag carrying it.

The variant problem is the one to think about early: every size and every colourway is a separate unit with a separate code. A four-size, two-colour design is eight codes, and applying them correctly is a sorting exercise. If your supplier can apply them per size at packing, take that option — the error rate is far lower than doing it yourself against a spreadsheet.

What Brand Registry gets you

  • Control over your own listings, which is the main thing. Without it, other sellers can attach to your product page and edit your content.
  • Access to enhanced content and brand storefronts, which matter more in apparel than in most categories because the buying decision is visual.
  • Tools for reporting infringement, which you will eventually need if the product does well.
  • It generally requires a registered trademark, which is why the trademark application is worth starting earlier than feels necessary.

The compliance that comes along regardless

Everything that applies to selling apparel in the US applies here too, and Amazon will ask for evidence of some of it. Fibre content, company identity and country of origin on the label. Care instructions. If it is a children's product, the Children's Product Certificate and the tracking label — Amazon actively requests documentation in that category and will suspend listings that cannot produce it.

None of this is Amazon being difficult. It is the underlying law, arriving with an enforcement mechanism attached.

Whether it suits a new brand at all

Honestly: it depends on what you are making. Amazon is a search engine where people arrive with a category in mind. That works well for plain, functional, spec-led apparel — a heavyweight blank tee, a work polo, a gym short — where the buyer is comparing attributes.

It works considerably less well for graphic-led brands where the value is the design and the story, because the platform strips almost all of the context that makes that product worth its price. A lot of young brands would do better putting the same energy into a direct store and a wholesale line sheet.

If you do go, order small first. Twenty pieces per design is enough to test whether a listing converts before you commit to the inventory position that channel really wants.

Every range is made to order from a 20-piece minimum in 10–15 working days, with tiered pricing up to 40% off at volume. Price your order or order a sample pack first.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about ecommerce — answered.

Generally yes, individually, with a suffocation warning on bags above the specified size and the item identifiable through the bag. Specify it at production and it is included in packing rather than becoming a manual job later.

Ask — per-size barcode application at packing is a normal request, and it is far more accurate than sorting and labelling a mixed shipment yourself after delivery.

Not to sell, but Brand Registry generally requires one, and without Brand Registry you have limited control over your own listing content. That is why the application is worth starting early.

Less so than for spec-led basics. Amazon suits buyers comparing attributes; graphic-led brands lose most of the context that justifies their price, and often do better through a direct store and wholesale.
