Run Club Shirts: Merch That Builds a Running Community
By The Velocity Wear Team
Run clubs are booming in US cities. Weekly social runs that end at a coffee shop or brewery have become a way to meet people as much as a way to train. And every good run club eventually wants merch. The best run club shirts look like something from a design-led running brand, not a 5K giveaway.
Design like a brand
- A simple wordmark for the club name, often in a clean sans serif.
- Your city or neighborhood and the day you run: Tuesday Run Club, Brooklyn.
- A minimal icon, like a route line or a coffee cup.
- Earthy or muted colors: cream, sage, washed black, brick.
- Small front print, bigger back graphic.
Look at what members already wear to runs and coffee afterward. That's your design brief.
Running shirts vs lifestyle shirts
For actual running, lightweight technical fabrics work best. For the social side, the coffee after, the weekend errands, a soft cotton tee is what people reach for. Many clubs start with a cotton lifestyle tee and a crewneck because they sell better as merch. Our tees are combed ring-spun cotton, great for exactly that.
Pre-order your first drop
Announce the design at a run, share a mockup on Instagram, and open a two-week pre-order. You'll know sizes exactly and nobody fronts money for stock. Our minimum is 20 per design with sizes mixed, which most active clubs reach easily.
Partner with local businesses
The coffee shop or brewery where your club meets might co-brand a shirt or sponsor a run. A small partner logo on the sleeve or back is a nice way to thank them, and they might sell the shirts at the counter too.
Pricing
Most run clubs are free to join, so merch often covers costs like race entries or event supplies. Price shirts to cover cost plus a small margin and be open about what it funds. Check per-shirt costs on the calculator.
Beyond t-shirts
Crewneck sweatshirts and hoodies sell well in fall and winter, when post-run hangs get chilly. Caps are popular for sunny runs. A small range of two or three items works better than trying to be a full running brand.
Timing
Production takes 10 to 15 working days after artwork approval, then shipping. Plan drops around moments: the club's anniversary, a local race weekend, or the start of fall running season.
Make members feel like insiders
The most successful run club merch has a detail only members understand: the meeting time printed on the sleeve, the route name, the coffee order everyone gets afterward. It turns a shirt into a membership card. Consider a small, limited run for members who hit a milestone, like 50 runs, which people wear with real pride.
Race weekend shirts
When club members travel to a big race together, a club shirt for the trip makes great photos at the expo and finish line.
Pacers and leaders
Run leaders and pacers in a distinct color with PACER or LEADER on the back help new runners find the right group.
Weather layers
For winter runs and chilly coffee stops, offer a club crewneck or hoodie alongside tees so members can rep the club year-round.
