Puff print uses an ink additive that expands when heat-cured, raising the design off the fabric. It is one of several specialty screen printing finishes — alongside high-density, metallic, foil and glitter — used to give printed apparel physical texture and a more premium, considered feel.

How Puff Works

A blowing agent is mixed into the ink. When the print passes through the curing process, that agent expands, lifting the ink into a soft raised relief. The effect is immediately tactile — the design has height you can feel, which is exactly why it reads as more valuable than a flat print. It has become a signature of contemporary streetwear for precisely that reason.

The Main Specialty Finishes

Each does something different and suits different artwork.

  • Puff: soft, rounded relief. Best on bold, simple shapes and chunky lettering — fine detail gets lost as the ink expands and spreads.
  • High-density: builds a thick, sharp-edged raised block with vertical sides, giving a much more defined, almost moulded look than puff's softer swell.
  • Metallic and foil: reflective finishes, with foil applied as a separate layer over adhesive. High impact, though less flexible and needing gentler care.
  • Glitter and shimmer: suspended particles in the ink, used sparingly for accent areas rather than large coverage.

Designing for Puff

The critical constraint is that the ink expands outward as well as upward. Fine lines thicken, small gaps between elements can close up, and detailed artwork loses definition. Designs need drawing with that in mind — generous spacing, chunky forms, and no reliance on thin strokes. Text works well in heavy weights and poorly in light ones. This is not a limitation to work around so much as a style to design into; the finishes that look best are the ones designed for the process from the start.

“"Puff rewards bold shapes and punishes fine detail. Design for the swell and it looks intentional."”

Where These Finishes Belong

Specialty finishes suit garments being sold rather than given away, because they add cost and their whole value is in perceived quality. A heavyweight hoodie with a puff chest print supports a higher price than the same hoodie with a flat print. They are less appropriate for workwear and uniform, where durability under frequent hot washing matters more than texture — raised and foil finishes need gentler care than standard prints.

Care and Durability

Raised and metallic finishes are more vulnerable than flat prints to heat and abrasion. Wash inside out at low temperature, avoid tumble drying, and never iron directly onto the print. If you are selling garments with these finishes, include that guidance — it costs nothing and prevents the most common cause of disappointment.

Placing the Order

Specialty finishes are screen printing techniques, so they carry the same per-colour setup logic and become more economical at volume. Orders start at 50 pieces with mixed sizes, typically around 10–15 working days from artwork approval, plus 2–5 working days tracked UK delivery, with bulk discounts up to around 35%.
