How to Tell Whether a Print Will Survive: Testing Before You Commit

Print failure is a delayed fault. Everything looks right on delivery, and the problem appears weeks later across a whole batch. Since it is the customer who usually discovers it, a small amount of testing before committing is worth a great deal.
The failures worth testing for
- 1**Cracking.** The print splits along fold lines. Usually a cure problem or an over-thick deposit.
- 2**Peeling or lifting at edges.** Characteristic of transfer methods that were under-pressed or insufficiently cured.
- 3**Fading.** Pigment washing out, most visible on strong colours.
- 4**Bleeding.** Garment dye migrating into the print, turning a white print pink on a red garment. A sublimation issue on polyester, and it can appear weeks after delivery.
- 5**Hand feel change.** Print going hard and brittle after washing, which usually indicates it was not properly cured.
A protocol you can actually run
You do not need a lab. You need one sample, a washing machine and about a fortnight.
- **Photograph the print** under consistent light, close up, before anything else.
- **Wash it twenty times** at the temperature your customers will actually use — which is warmer than your care label suggests, because people ignore care labels.
- **Tumble dry half the cycles.** This is the harshest realistic treatment and the one that finds transfer failures.
- **Stretch the print** across a fold after every few cycles and look for hairline cracks.
- **Photograph again** under the same light and compare directly rather than from memory.
Twenty cycles will not simulate years, but it reliably separates prints that will hold from prints that were never cured properly. Most catastrophic failures appear within ten.
The cure question
Most print failure traces back to incomplete curing. Plastisol has to reach a specific temperature throughout the ink film — not on the surface, throughout. A print that looks dry and was not fully cured feels fine, passes visual inspection, and fails in the wash.
A useful question for any printer: how do you verify cure? A confident answer mentions temperature measurement of the ink film rather than dryer settings or belt speed alone. Dryer settings are an input; ink film temperature is the thing that matters.
Dye migration, which catches people out
On polyester and poly-blends, the garment’s own dye can sublimate under heat and migrate into the print, discolouring it. It can appear during production or gradually over weeks afterwards, which is what makes it so unwelcome.
It is managed with blocker inks and controlled cure temperatures. If you are printing light colours onto dark polyester, ask directly what is being done about migration — this is one of the few failure modes that is entirely predictable from the fabric and ink combination.
Where this fits in ordering
Test at sample stage, before the bulk run. At a 20-piece minimum a first order doubles as a durability test — wash one and keep the rest. That is a considerably cheaper way to find out than discovering it on a reorder of 500.
