A pre-order sells the product before you produce it, so you order exactly what has been paid for and carry no unsold stock. The trade-off is that customers wait — and the entire success of the approach depends on setting a realistic date and meeting it.

What Pre-Orders Solve

The central risk in apparel is producing garments nobody buys, in sizes nobody wanted. Pre-orders eliminate it. You know the exact quantity and the exact size breakdown before you place the order, your capital is not tied up in speculation, and you can order at a volume that genuinely reflects demand rather than a guess. For a new brand or an untested design, that is a substantial advantage.

What They Cost You

Three things, and they are real.

  • Conversion. Some customers will not buy something they cannot have now, so a pre-order sells to fewer people than in-stock would.
  • Trust exposure. You are holding money for an undelivered product, which makes your communication and timekeeping part of the product.
  • Inflexibility. Once the window closes and the order is placed, you cannot serve anyone who arrives late without a second run.
  • Momentum. The energy of a launch dissipates over a multi-week wait unless you actively maintain it.

Setting an Honest Timeline

This is where pre-orders succeed or fail, and the arithmetic is not complicated. Production runs around 10–15 working days from artwork approval for screen printing and embroidery, or nearer 15–20 for sublimation and complex jobs, plus 2–5 working days tracked UK delivery to you — and then you need time to check, pack and dispatch. Add all of that up, add a buffer for the proofing stage, and quote the resulting date rather than an optimistic one.

“"Quote the date you are confident about, not the date you hope for. Nobody remembers a conservative estimate that was met."”

Communicating During the Wait

Silence during a pre-order period is what turns patient customers into anxious ones. A short update when the order is placed, another when stock arrives, and a dispatch notification costs almost nothing and prevents nearly all pre-order complaints. If something slips, say so early and specifically — people accept delays they are told about far better than delays they discover.

A Middle Path

Pre-orders and stock are not mutually exclusive. A common approach is to run a pre-order window, then order the pre-ordered quantity plus a modest buffer so you have stock available immediately afterwards for people who missed it. Because bulk discounts reach up to around 35% as quantities rise, adding that buffer often costs less per piece than the pre-ordered units alone would have, which makes the buffer close to self-funding if it sells.

Practical Setup

State clearly on the product page that the item is a pre-order and when it will ship — burying it causes complaints and chargebacks. Publish real garment measurements so size decisions are made confidently in advance. Orders start at 50 pieces with mixed sizes allowed, so even a modest pre-order window can be fulfilled. Quick Answers

Common questions about ecommerce — answered.

You know the exact quantity and size breakdown before ordering, so you produce only what has been paid for. That removes unsold-stock risk and avoids tying up capital in speculation.

Add production — around 10–15 working days from artwork approval for screen printing and embroidery, or 15–20 for complex jobs — plus 2–5 working days delivery, plus your own checking and dispatch time, plus a proofing buffer. Quote that date, not an optimistic one.

Lower conversion, since some customers will not wait; trust exposure from holding money for undelivered goods; inflexibility once the window closes; and loss of launch momentum over a long wait.

Often yes. Bulk discounts up to around 35% mean a modest buffer can cost less per piece than the pre-ordered units alone, and it lets you serve customers who arrive after the window closes.
