Protect the garment first, present it second, and dispatch quickly. Clothing is forgiving to ship — it does not break — so packaging spend is better directed at presentation and speed than at protection you do not need.

Clothing Is Easy to Ship

Unlike most products, apparel is essentially unbreakable in transit. It does not need void fill, corner protection or a rigid box. What it does need is protection from moisture and dirt, and enough structure that it arrives folded rather than crumpled. That means most of what you might spend on protective packaging is unnecessary, and the budget is better spent elsewhere.

What Actually Matters

A short list covers it.

  • A moisture barrier — a polybag or equivalent — so a garment is not ruined by a wet doorstep.
  • A neat fold. A garment that arrives folded properly reads as considered; one that arrives compressed into a ball does not.
  • An outer mailer sized to the contents, since an oversized mailer looks careless and often costs more to send.
  • Something that identifies the sender, so the recipient knows what has arrived before opening it.

Presentation on a Budget

Expensive packaging is not required to feel considered. Tissue paper, a sticker, a printed card with care instructions, or simply a garment folded well and wrapped neatly all cost very little and change the experience substantially. The aim is for the recipient to feel that some thought went into it — which is achievable at low cost and is noticeably absent when a garment arrives loose in a plastic bag.

“"Nobody photographs a polybag. Plenty of people photograph a parcel that looked like someone cared."”

Include Care Instructions

A small card telling the customer to wash at 30 degrees, wash and iron inside out, and avoid tumble drying costs almost nothing and materially extends the life of the garment and its decoration. It also reduces complaints — a print that cracked because it was tumble dried on high is a support conversation you can prevent with a piece of card.

Speed Beats Everything

The gap between paying and receiving is where early goodwill is won or lost, and it is entirely within your control. Same-day or next-day dispatch does more for customer satisfaction than any packaging upgrade. That means having stock organised, packaging prepared in advance, and a routine for getting orders out rather than batching them until it is convenient.

Scaling the Process

As volume rises, the packing process itself becomes a constraint. Pre-folding stock, pre-labelling mailers and keeping sizes clearly separated all remove time from each order. If you are ordering at the 50-piece minimum to test and then reordering larger quantities where bulk discounts of up to around 35% apply, the packing workload grows with it — worth designing before it becomes urgent.

Tissue paper, a sticker, a printed care card, and a well-folded garment cost very little but change the experience substantially. The goal is evident thought rather than expense.

Yes. A small card advising a 30-degree wash, washing and ironing inside out and avoiding tumble drying extends garment and print life, and prevents avoidable complaints.
