Mesh Count in Screen Printing Explained

Mesh count is the number of threads per inch in the screen's fabric. A higher count means smaller openings, which holds finer detail but lets less ink through. A lower count is coarser and lays down more ink, which is exactly what opacity needs. That single trade-off explains most of what happens to your artwork between the file and the garment.
What the Number Is Counting
Picture a woven grid pulled tight in a frame. The thread count per inch sets the size of the holes between the threads, and those holes are the only route ink has to the garment. More threads per inch means smaller holes, less ink volume per pass and finer edges. Fewer threads means bigger holes, more ink and softer detail. Thread diameter matters too, since a thinner thread at the same count leaves more open area, but count is the headline number.
Detail Versus Deposit, and Why You Cannot Have Both
Fine detail wants small openings so the stencil can hold a crisp edge and tiny halftone dots survive. Opacity wants volume, because a bright white on a black garment is a physical quantity of pigment sitting on top of dark fabric. These two pull in opposite directions. Push the mesh up for detail and your white goes grey. Drop the mesh for opacity and fine lines close up and small text fills in.
Why Dark Garments Change Every Answer
On a white tee the fabric is already doing half the work of making colours look bright, and inks can be laid on more thinly. On black, every colour has to cover completely, usually over a white underbase printed at a lower mesh, flash cured, then printed on top of. The same artwork therefore gets more layers, more ink and more total film. That is why a design with hairline detail can look razor sharp on a white shirt and slightly muddy on a black one, and the difference is not carelessness. It is the mesh doing what it has to do to be opaque.
- Coarse mesh: heavy white underbases and solid blocks on dark garments, where volume matters more than edge quality.
- Mid-range mesh: everyday spot-colour work, logos and text at sensible sizes, which covers most orders.
- Higher mesh: halftones, fine line work and detailed illustration, mostly on light garments where opacity is less of a battle.
- Very high mesh: delicate detail and subtle tone, with the least ink deposit of all, so a genuinely light touch.
- Specialty inks: glitter, puff and high-density work need coarse mesh regardless of detail, because the ink itself has bulk.
The Stencil Sits on Top of the Mesh
Mesh is not the only variable. The emulsion coated onto the screen forms a stencil standing slightly proud of the mesh, and that thickness affects how well the screen seals against the garment. Too thin and ink creeps under the edges, so the print looks fuzzy. Too thick and you have effectively raised the ink deposit again. It is worth knowing chiefly because it explains why two printers using the same mesh count can produce visibly different results from the same file.
Inks That Decide the Mesh For You
Some inks take the choice away. Puff ink has to be laid on thickly because it expands during curing, so it demands a coarse mesh and rewards bold shapes rather than fine detail. Glitter contains actual particles that will not pass through a fine mesh at all. High-density work, where the ink stands up off the garment as a raised block, is deliberately about deposit. If your design uses any of these, plan the artwork around the ink rather than the other way round.
What This Means for the Artwork You Send
Keep line weights honest. A hairline that looks fine at 400% on a monitor may be below what any stencil can hold, and it will either close up or break. The same applies to small text, especially fine serifs and thin strokes that thicken unevenly as ink spreads. If a design has to carry small print, such as a sponsor list or a legal line, ask whether it should be a single solid colour at a slightly larger size, or whether DTF would serve it better.

Where the Buyer's Decisions Actually Land
You will never specify a mesh count, but you decide the two things that constrain it: garment colour and how much fine detail the design carries. If a design is detail-heavy and you have flexibility on colour, a lighter garment removes the underbase and makes the whole job easier. If the garment colour is fixed, simplifying the finest elements protects the parts that matter. Neither is a compromise on quality. They are just decisions taken in the right order.
