Why does rubber PVC suit a club crest?
Because a crest is usually a few solid colours with strong outlines, which is exactly what a PVC mould reproduces. Each colour is a separate raised area, so the club colours stand up off the surface and can be felt with a thumb. PVC is soft and flexible too, which suits a keyring clipped to a kit bag or pushed into a locker. When is metal the better choice for gym members?
When the keychain marks a commitment rather than a sign-up. A brushed or plated metal tag with an engraved logo and a premium split ring suits annual members, personal training clients finishing a programme, a club's life members or a player reaching a landmark appearance. It feels like an award, and the engraving will not rub off. Present it in a gift box. Leather works in the same way for a club with a heritage feel, such as a rowing or golf club.
How many designs does a club need?
Each separate design or material counts as its own design with a 50-piece minimum, so plan the range before ordering. A club shop keyring and a junior version with a mascot are two designs. The same crest in PVC for the shop and in metal for life members is also two. A club with several age groups can share one crest design across all of them, keeping it to a single run. Keep the shop design undated so it sells across seasons.
Can a keyring make money in a club shop?
It can, if it is priced and placed well. A keyring sits at the low end of a club shop, next to the bottles and caps, and suits a parent buying something small for a junior player. Work out the break-even from your quote before setting a price, and ask for two quantities if you are unsure how many will sell. When should a club order for the new season?
Count back from the first day of the season or the joining campaign: freight, then 10 to 15 working days of production, then the time the committee takes to approve the proof. For a season starting in August or September, send the enquiry in early summer, before volunteers go on holiday. A gym running a January joining campaign should order in November. If the committee wants to see one, one or two samples cost £150 including worldwide shipping, credited against the bulk order.
