Custom keychains for a small business start at 50 pieces per design, which makes them a low-risk item to add to a merch range. Clothing brands, creators and shops sell them as a checkout add-on or part of a drop, in metal, leather, acrylic, rubber PVC, wood or as a bottle opener. Production takes 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval, before freight.

Why add keychains to a merch range?

Because they sit at a different price point from everything else. Someone not ready for a hoodie will buy a keychain, and someone buying the hoodie may add one at checkout. They are light to post, come in no sizes, and a single design covers every customer. For a label, a keychain also takes the brand onto something carried every day, not only worn at weekends. It is the merch item least likely to be returned for not fitting.

Which keychain suits which kind of brand?

Match the material to what the brand already looks like. A label built on graphics wants colour, a label built on craft wants leather or wood, and a minimal label wants metal. Every material is shown with a logo on the merch keychain range.

How do you test demand with 50 pieces?

Treat the first run as the test. Fifty pieces of one design is enough to put on a product page, include in a drop and see how it sells before committing to more. Each separate design or material counts as its own design, so testing PVC against acrylic means two runs of 50. Keep the approved proof: a reorder of a design that sold is a new run on the same 10 to 15 working day schedule, and it matches the first.

Should a keychain go in the drop or at checkout?

Both work, for different reasons. In a drop, a keychain version of the drop's graphic gives fans a lower-priced way in and completes the set; cap and tee merch bundles covers building packs around a hero piece. At checkout, an evergreen logo keychain is the impulse add-on, so it should stay undated and in stock. A label can run both: a drop design that sells out, and a core logo keychain that is always there.

How should merch keychains be packaged?

For a shelf or a premium online order, a gift box. Gift boxes are available for retail orders, and they protect the keychain in the post as well as presenting it; keychain gift boxes covers when a box pays for itself. For a streetwear drop shipped with a tee, the keychain can simply travel in the same parcel as the garment, with no box needed.

What artwork works on a merch keychain?

The artwork that works on a tee rarely works at keychain size unchanged. A back print full of detail needs cutting down to its strongest element: a logo, a character, a single graphic. On acrylic that element can stay full colour; on PVC it needs a few solid colours; on metal, leather or wood it becomes one engraved tone. Custom acrylic keychains in bulk covers see-through areas and file preparation, and the clothing brands page covers the rest of a label's production.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about keychains — answered.

Keychains are good merch for a small clothing brand because they sell at a lower price point than garments, need no sizes and are light to post. The 50-piece minimum per design keeps a first run small enough to test. Rubber PVC and acrylic suit graphic labels, leather suits heritage brands and engraved metal suits minimal ones.

Good keychain merch ideas for creators include a full-colour character or illustration printed on clear acrylic, a catchphrase or logo in raised rubber PVC, and a limited drop design that matches a tee or cap. Each separate design needs 50 pieces, so start with one strong design and add more once you know what your audience buys.

Custom keychains can be sold in your shop under your own brand, since each one carries your logo or artwork, engraved, moulded or printed depending on the material. Gift boxes are available for retail orders if they need to sit on a shelf. Each design starts at 50 pieces and takes 10 to 15 working days to produce once the proof is approved.

A brand ordering keychains for a first drop should usually start at or near the 50-piece minimum per design, which is enough to list, sell and learn from. A drop with two designs means two runs of 50. The design that sells can be reordered from its approved proof, so starting small does not stop you scaling up later.
