Juneteenth Shirts for Community Events and Organizations
By The Velocity Wear Team
Juneteenth shirts get about sixty-six hundred US searches a month in season. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is celebrated with festivals, cookouts, church services, parades and family gatherings. Shirts for these events should reflect the day's meaning as well as its joy.
Who orders
- Community organizations running festivals and parades.
- Churches holding services and celebrations.
- Schools and cultural centers.
- Black-owned businesses and professional associations.
- Families holding reunions around the holiday.
Design with care
Many communities commission local Black artists to design their Juneteenth shirts, which keeps the design rooted in the community and supports artists. Common design elements include the Juneteenth flag, the date June 19, 1865, pan-African colors, and words like Freedom and Celebrate. Research history accurately and involve community voices.
Businesses
If you're a business marking Juneteenth, focus on genuine support: sponsoring a community event, supporting local organizations, or giving staff the day. A logo-heavy promotional shirt can feel like marketing rather than commemoration.
Selling shirts
Festival shirts can raise money for community programs. Be transparent about where proceeds go.
Timing
Production takes 10 to 15 working days after artwork approval, plus shipping. June is busy for event printing, so approve designs by early May.
Sizing
Community events span all ages. Offer youth and adult sizes and a relaxed fit. Our minimum is 20 per design with sizes mixed.
Mistakes to avoid
- 1Historical inaccuracies in the design.
- 2Using an artist's work without permission or credit.
- 3Business shirts that feel purely promotional.
- 4Ordering in June.
Quick checklist
- Community or local artist involved?
- History checked?
- Proceeds transparent?
- Artwork approved by early May?
- Youth and adult sizes?
Working with local artists
Commissioning a local artist gives your shirt authenticity and supports the creative community. Agree the brief, fee, timeline and usage rights in writing. Credit the artist on social posts and, if appropriate, on the shirt itself with a small signature. Share proceeds or pay a fair fee upfront, and let the artist approve the final proof.
Educational elements
Some organizations include a short historical note on the back or on a card packaged with the shirt, explaining the significance of June 19, 1865, and the Juneteenth flag's symbolism. It turns a shirt into a conversation starter and supports the educational side of the celebration.
Festival logistics
For festivals, order volunteer and staff shirts in a distinct color from shirts sold to attendees. Plan a merch booth with sizes clearly displayed and card payments available. Order a size split weighted toward adults but include youth sizes for families.
Churches and faith communities
Churches often hold Juneteenth services, cookouts and community gatherings. A church-specific design with the congregation's name and a meaningful scripture or phrase alongside Juneteenth elements works well. Members appreciate a shirt that connects faith and heritage.
Reusing designs
If you leave the year off, shirts can be worn at future celebrations. Many organizations keep a core design and add a yearly sleeve print for annual events, which keeps costs down while still marking each year.
Colors and symbolism
Many Juneteenth designs use the red, white and blue of the Juneteenth flag, whose star represents Texas and freedom for all Black Americans, and whose burst represents a new beginning. Others use red, black and green, the pan-African colors. If you use symbols, explain them in your event materials so the meaning is shared, not assumed.
Accessibility
Offer extended sizes and youth sizes so everyone in the community can wear the shirt, from grandparents to toddlers.
