How to Wash Custom Printed Clothing So It Lasts

Wash at 30 degrees, turn garments inside out, avoid tumble drying, and iron inside out rather than directly on the print. Heat is what degrades both fabric and decoration, and tumble drying applies more of it than washing does.

Why Prints Crack

A screen print or transfer is a layer bonded to the fabric surface. It cracks through repeated flexing, and flexing is dramatically accelerated by heat — which softens the print layer while the fabric moves around it. That is why tumble drying is more damaging than washing: the garment is being agitated and heated simultaneously, for a longer period, at a higher temperature. Air drying removes the single largest cause of print failure.

The Care Routine

Five instructions cover almost everything.

  • Wash at 30 degrees. Cooler washing preserves both colour and print, and modern detergents work perfectly well at that temperature.
  • Turn garments inside out before washing, so the printed surface is not abraded against the drum and other items.
  • Avoid tumble drying. Dry flat or hang — this is the single most effective thing anyone can do for a printed garment.
  • Iron inside out, and never directly onto the print. Direct heat on a print can soften, mark or permanently damage it.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh stain removers, which attack dye and print alike.

Embroidery Is Different

Stitched decoration has no surface layer to crack, so it is far more tolerant — which is exactly why embroidery is specified for uniform and workwear washed hot and often. It still benefits from being washed inside out to protect the threads from abrasion, and from not being ironed directly, which can flatten the stitching and dull its texture.

Specialty Finishes Need More Care

Puff, high-density, foil, metallic and reflective finishes are all more vulnerable than a standard flat print. Heat is particularly damaging to raised and foil finishes, which can flatten or lift. For any garment with these finishes, inside-out cool washing and air drying is not a recommendation but a requirement if the finish is to survive.

Shrinkage

Cotton shrinks when heat and moisture release the tension built into the fabric during knitting, and most of that happens on the first hot wash. Washing cool and air drying keeps a cotton garment close to its original size more or less indefinitely. Poly-cotton blends shrink substantially less, which is why they are standard for workwear that has to be washed hot for hygiene reasons.

Tell Your Customers

If you sell garments, include a short care card or printed care label. It costs almost nothing, extends the life of what you sold, and prevents the most common support conversation — a print that failed because it was tumble dried on high. A garment that still looks good in two years is also the most effective argument for buying from you again.
