How Fibre Blends Change Garment Behaviour

Each fibre in a blend brings its own behaviour and the finished fabric inherits all of them. Cotton gives softness, breathability and dye depth but shrinks and creases. Polyester gives dimensional stability, colour retention and quick drying but holds odour and can bleed dye into prints. Elastane gives stretch recovery in tiny quantities. Viscose gives drape and a cool hand while being weak when wet. Choosing a blend is choosing which trade-offs you can live with.
What Each Fibre Contributes
Cotton is a natural cellulose fibre, absorbent and comfortable against skin, and it takes dye beautifully. Its weaknesses are predictable: it shrinks on first wash, it creases, it dries slowly, and it loses strength when it is soaked and agitated repeatedly.
Polyester holds its dimensions, resists creasing, dries fast and keeps its colour under sunlight and washing. It is less breathable, can feel plasticky at low qualities, and retains odour in a way cotton does not.
Elastane, sometimes called spandex, is used in very small proportions because a little goes a long way. Its job is recovery: pulling the fabric back to shape after stretching. A few percent in a polo or a rib transforms how the garment holds its form over a year.
Viscose is a regenerated cellulose fibre that gives beautiful drape and a smooth, cool hand. It is markedly weaker when wet, which is why it shows up as the minority partner in triblends rather than on its own.
Why 50/50 Became a Standard
The classic polycotton blend sits around half and half for a reason. You get much of cotton's comfort with much of polyester's stability, so the garment shrinks less, holds its shape through repeated laundering and dries faster than pure cotton. For uniform washed frequently, that combination is hard to beat.
It is not free. A polycotton tee breathes less than a pure cotton one on a hot day, and the dye depth on dark colours is usually a shade less rich because the two fibres take dye differently. For merchandise where feel is the selling point, pure cotton often wins. For a hospitality uniform washed several times a week, the blend usually does.
Triblends and Where They Fit
Triblends combine cotton, polyester and viscose to produce a specific hand feel: soft, drapey, slightly heathered, lighter than a standard tee. They suit retail merchandise because they feel like a garment somebody chose rather than one they were given.
Their limits are worth stating plainly. Triblends are generally lighter and less opaque, they are not the toughest option for heavy wear, and the viscose content makes them less resilient to hard laundering. They are a merchandise fabric, not a workwear one.

Blend and Decoration Compatibility
This is where fibre content stops being an abstraction and starts constraining your options directly.
- DTG works on cotton only, so a high-polyester blend rules it out regardless of how the design looks.
- Sublimation works on polyester only and on light bases only, because the dye becomes part of the fibre rather than sitting on top of it.
- DTF works across cotton, blends and polyester, which is what makes it the flexible choice when the garment is a blend and the artwork is detailed.
- Screen printing handles blends well, but polyester content raises the question of dye migration and often needs a blocking underbase.
- Embroidery is essentially indifferent to fibre content, though very lightweight or stretchy blends need more careful stabilising.
Dye Migration, the Blend Problem Nobody Mentions
Here is the specific issue that catches people out on coloured polyester and polycotton. Polyester is dyed with disperse dyes, and those dyes can move under heat. Printing and curing apply heat. On a dark polyester garment with a white or light print, dye can migrate up into the ink over the following days and weeks, so a crisp white print gradually turns pink on a red garment or grey on a navy one.
It is preventable. A blocking underbase, appropriate low-cure inks and correct curing temperatures all address it, and an experienced supplier will raise it before you order rather than after. The reason to know about it as a buyer is simple: if you are putting light artwork on dark polyester or a high-poly blend, ask the question up front. It is not a defect that appears immediately, so it will not show on the sample that arrives next week.
Matching Blend to Purpose
Work backwards from how the garment lives. Something washed constantly and worn hard wants polyester content for stability. Something judged on feel wants cotton, or a triblend if drape is the selling point. Anything fitted that must survive a year of wear wants a little elastane. Sports kit needing all-over print has to be polyester, because sublimation cannot work on anything else.
Do not choose a blend to satisfy every scenario. Uniform programmes that try to cover an outdoor crew and an office team with one fabric usually end up satisfying neither, and it is cheaper to run two garments than to replace one twice.
