How Do I Get My Exact Brand Colour on Fabric?

Send a Pantone reference, specified as solid coated, along with the garment colour it will print on. Screen printing gets closest because ink is physically mixed to that reference. DTF and DTG convert through CMYK and land near but not exact. Embroidery matches to the nearest shade in a fixed thread range, so you get a thread number rather than a match.
Your Brand Probably Has Two Colours
Start here, because it explains most colour disagreements. Brands built properly have a Pantone for print and a hex code for screen. Those two were chosen for different media and they are almost never perfect equivalents. The hex was picked to look right glowing on a display. The Pantone was picked to look right as mixed ink on paper.
So a designer working from your hex and a printer working from your Pantone will produce two garments that do not match, and both of them will be correct. Decide before you brief which one is the reference. Write it in the brief. This one sentence prevents an entire category of argument.
Your Monitor Is Lying to You
Every screen renders colour differently, and almost nobody outside a design studio has a calibrated one. Phones aggressively boost saturation. Laptops shift with brightness and viewing angle. Two people looking at the same digital proof on different devices are genuinely seeing different colours.
This is why a physical reference beats a screen every time. Pantone chips exist because ink on paper is a thing you can hold under daylight and agree on. If your brand guidelines name a Pantone, that number is worth more than any screenshot anyone circulates.
Screen Printing: As Close As It Gets
In screen printing the ink is mixed to your Pantone as a spot colour, not built from a process approximation. That makes it the closest match available on fabric, and the reason serious brand work still goes to screen for solid-colour logos.
Two caveats. Ink on a knitted textile does not behave exactly like ink on smooth coated paper, so a small shift is normal and unavoidable. And on dark garments the colour sits on a white underbase that is never perfectly opaque, so a little of the fabric influences the result. Neither is a fault. Both are worth knowing before you compare a shirt against a printed chip in your hand.
Digital Methods and the Gamut Problem
DTF and DTG build colours from a process set rather than mixing to a spot. That handles photographic and multi-colour artwork brilliantly, but it means some colours are outside what the process can physically reach. The usual casualties are vivid oranges, intense pure blues, deep rich navies and anything fluorescent.
If your brand colour is one of those, you have a real decision to make rather than a technical problem to solve. Either accept a close approximation for detailed digital work, or use screen printing for the pieces where the colour genuinely has to be right and accept a simpler design in exchange.
Embroidery Does Not Mix Colours At All
Thread comes in a fixed palette. There is no blending, no mixing, no adjusting: you pick the nearest available shade from the range and that is your colour. Good thread ranges are extensive and the nearest shade is usually very convincing, but it is a selection rather than a match.
The practical move is to lock down the thread number once and record it in your brand notes. Then every future order, in any garment, uses that same number. Consistency across your own orders matters far more to how a uniform looks than absolute fidelity to a Pantone chip nobody is holding up for comparison.

The Fabric Is Part of the Colour
The same ink behaves differently depending on what is underneath it. On white cotton you see close to the true colour. On a heather or marl fabric, which is spun from two different coloured fibres, everything shifts slightly and softens, because the base itself is not one colour. On dark garments the underbase becomes part of the equation.
Texture matters too. A brushed fleece scatters light differently from a smooth pique polo, so an identical print reads slightly deeper on one than the other. If a colour must hold across a mixed range of garments, that is a briefing conversation, not a proofing one.
What to Send
- The Pantone reference, stated as solid coated, since coated and uncoated versions of the same number look different.
- The hex code as well, so we can see whether your two references agree with each other.
- The exact garment colour and style, because the base changes how the ink reads.
- Which element is colour critical, if not all of them. A logo mark and a background block rarely carry equal weight.
- Any existing garment or printed item you want the new order to sit alongside, so consistency has something concrete to aim at.
The Realistic Standard
Aim for a match that nobody questions when the garment is on a person in a room, not a match that survives laboratory measurement. That is not lowering the bar, it is aiming at the bar that actually exists. Textile decoration is a physical process on an absorbent, textured, coloured surface, and small variation is part of it.
Nominate the reference, specify the garment, check the proof carefully and record what you approved. Do that once and every reorder afterwards is straightforward.
