Custom keychains are made in one of three ways, set by the material: a laser engraves the logo into metal, leather or wood; rubber PVC is moulded with the logo raised in 3D; and acrylic is printed. What are the steps in making a custom keychain?
Whatever the material, a factory run follows the same order of work, and every piece in our keychains range goes through it. The differences between materials all sit in step three.

How are metal keychains laser engraved?
The tag starts as a brushed or plated metal blank. A laser, guided by a file made from your artwork, marks the surface where the logo sits, altering a very thin layer so the design becomes part of the metal. Nothing is added on top, so the logo is permanent and cannot rub off. The limit is detail: engraving is a single tone, and hairline strokes close up at small sizes. A premium split ring goes on last. How are PVC keychains moulded?
Rubber PVC keychains are made in a mould cut from the approved artwork. In general terms, each colour area of the design is its own recess, soft PVC fills those areas colour by colour, and the piece is set and released with the logo standing proud of the surface. That is where the 3D comes from, and it is also why PVC artwork needs bold shapes, a small number of solid colours and clear outlines between them. How are acrylic keychains printed?
An acrylic keychain is a clear, rigid tag with the design printed on it. Because it is print rather than engraving or moulding, acrylic is the material that handles full-colour artwork, gradients and illustrations. The one design decision unique to clear material is what shows through: any area of the tag left without print stays see-through, so the proof shows whether your logo floats on clear acrylic or sits on a coloured panel. How are leather and wooden keychains finished?
A leather keychain is a strap, stitched along its edges and fixed to a metal loop with a rivet, a small metal pin pressed through the leather to hold the loop firmly. The logo is laser engraved into the leather surface, where it shows tone on tone. Wooden tags are cut, then laser engraved the same way, leaving a darker mark in the grain. Can you make custom keychains yourself?
For five or ten keychains for a craft stall, home methods can work. For a business run of 50 or more carrying a logo, they stop being sensible quickly:

The honest line sits roughly where a keychain has to represent a brand. A handmade piece for a friend can be charmingly imperfect; 100 keyrings handed to clients cannot.
