Graduation and Leavers Apparel: Ordering Keepsake Clothing
By The Velocity Wear Team
Leavers and graduation clothing is a keepsake rather than merchandise, which changes the specification: a better blank is worth the cost, and every name on a printed list must be checked against an official register before artwork is approved.
A Different Kind of Purchase
Most apparel is bought to be worn and eventually replaced. A leavers hoodie is bought to be kept — people still have theirs a decade later, and they will look at the name list long after they have stopped wearing it. That changes two decisions. First, the blank matters more than usual: a thin hoodie that has degraded within a year undermines the point of a keepsake. Second, accuracy becomes critical in a way it is not on ordinary merch.
Name Lists
The classic design puts the cohort on the back as a name list, often shaped into a year, a number or an institution name. Practical requirements follow from that.
- This is print work, not embroidery. Stitch cannot reproduce a hundred small names legibly.
- Check every spelling against an official register rather than a self-submitted list — people mistype their own names surprisingly often.
- Confirm the final list in writing before approving artwork, and treat that confirmation as a hard cut-off.
- Consider how to handle late additions and people who prefer not to appear, and agree the policy before collecting names.
The Spelling Problem
It is worth being blunt about this: a misspelled name on a keepsake garment is the error nobody forgets and nobody forgives. Names with accents, hyphens, apostrophes and less common spellings are where mistakes cluster, and a proofreader unfamiliar with the cohort will not catch them. Have the list checked by someone who knows the group, then checked again against official records.
“"Ten years later, nobody will remember what the hoodie cost. The person whose name was spelled wrong will remember that."”
Timelines Around Fixed Dates
Graduation and end-of-term dates do not move, and the slow part is rarely production — it is collecting names and sizes from a large group of people, many of whom will not respond promptly. Production runs around 10–15 working days from artwork approval for screen printing, plus 2–5 working days tracked UK delivery. Work backwards from the date, then add generous contingency for the collection stage, because that is where the schedule actually goes wrong.
Sizing
Collect sizes with an actual size guide available rather than from memory. Leavers hoodies are frequently worn oversized, so many people will want to size up — say so explicitly when collecting, or you will receive a set of answers based on inconsistent assumptions. Mixed sizes are allowed within the 20-piece minimum, so the full spread goes into a single run.
Budget and Ordering
Bulk discounts reach up to around 40% as quantities rise, so a single consolidated cohort order is substantially cheaper per piece than separate group orders. Run your actual numbers through the free instant price calculator before setting the price charged to students or parents, so the collection covers the order. Preview the name-list layout in the free Design Studio before approving — long lists need checking at actual size for legibility as well as accuracy.
