4th of July Shirts: A Planning Guide for Shops and Events

By The Velocity Wear Team

4th of July shirts get over twenty thousand US searches a month at peak, and almost all of that happens in June. Boutiques, online shops, towns running parades and fireworks, and businesses hosting cookouts all want patriotic tees. If you want stock in hand for June, planning starts in early spring.

Who sells and orders 4th of July shirts

  • Boutiques and online shops selling seasonal collections.
  • Towns, chambers of commerce and parade committees.
  • Breweries, bars and restaurants hosting July 4th events.
  • Families and neighborhoods doing matching shirts for a block party.
  • Summer camps and churches.

Designs that sell

  • Vintage Americana graphics with a faded, retro feel.
  • Your town name with Est. year and stars and stripes.
  • Simple red, white and blue typography.
  • Local twists: your state shape, a local landmark, a regional phrase.
  • Comfort-color style washed tees in muted reds and blues.

The US Flag Code

The US Flag Code suggests the flag shouldn't be used as apparel. It's guidance rather than an enforced law for private citizens, and flag-inspired designs are extremely common. Still, some customers care. Stylized stars and stripes, patriotic colors and slogans are a respectful middle ground many brands choose.

Timeline

Sales ramp from late May. To photograph, list and promote, you want stock by mid May. Production takes 10 to 15 working days after artwork approval, plus shipping. So approve designs by early to mid April, and design in March.

How many to order

Seasonal shirts are the riskiest stock you'll hold. On July 5th, demand falls off a cliff. Order based on last year's sales if you have them, and lean conservative. Our minimum is 20 per design with sizes mixed, so you can test two or three designs rather than betting on one big run.

Pricing

Seasonal shirts are impulse buys, and shoppers happily pay for a design they love. Check your per-shirt cost on the price calculator, then price to leave room for a modest early-July sale to clear remaining stock.

Event shirts

For parades and fireworks committees, bright shirts for volunteers help crowds find help. Put VOLUNTEER or STAFF on the back in large letters, with the event name and year.

Sell before and on the day

Online, start promoting in late May with photos of real people wearing the shirts outdoors. In store, put them near the entrance from Memorial Day. At events, a merch tent near food and drink sees the most traffic. Kids' sizes sell well at family events, so don't skip youth sizes if families are your crowd.

Plan for what's left

Decide before the holiday what you'll do with remaining stock: a July 5th sale, a bundle with another item, or holding back a small quantity for next year if the design isn't year-specific. Leaving the year off a design makes leftovers far easier to sell next summer.

Towns, parades and fireworks committees

Town celebrations often sell commemorative shirts to fund fireworks. A design with the town name, year and a local landmark sells to residents who return every year. Leave room in the budget for volunteers' shirts.

Restaurants and bars

Holiday cookouts and rooftop parties benefit from staff shirts in patriotic colors.
