Digitising: Turning Your Logo Into Stitches

Embroidery is the decoration method most likely to surprise a new brand, because it is not printing. There is no file that gets reproduced. A digitiser takes your artwork and builds a stitch file — deciding stitch types, directions, densities, the order things are sewn and where the machine travels between elements. It is a skilled interpretation, and the quality of that interpretation is why the same logo looks sharp from one supplier and muddy from another.
What embroidery physically cannot do
- Very fine lines. Below roughly a couple of millimetres of stroke width, a line becomes a row of stitches that fills in and reads as a blob.
- Small text. There is a practical minimum letter height and below it letters close up. Serifs and thin strokes fail first.
- Gradients and photographic imagery. Thread is a solid colour; tonal blends can be approximated with clever stitching but not reproduced.
- Perfect fine registration between adjacent colours, especially on stretchy or high-pile fabric.
None of these is a supplier being unhelpful. They are properties of pushing thread through cloth.
Design a version for stitching
The brands that get good embroidery treat it as a distinct output rather than expecting one logo to work everywhere. That usually means an embroidery version: thicker strokes, fewer colours, larger text or no text at all, and details simplified rather than shrunk.
This is not a compromise so much as a translation. Look at any long-established brand's embroidered mark and you will find it is not identical to its printed one — the proportions have been adjusted for the medium.
Fabric changes the result
A logo that stitches crisply on a woven polo can look sunken on a heavyweight fleece, because the pile swallows the stitching. The fix is appropriate backing and a digitising approach adjusted for the base — which the digitiser can only do if they know what the base is.
So tell your supplier the garment when you send artwork for embroidery. "Left chest logo" is not enough information; "left chest logo, 450 GSM brushed-back fleece hoodie" is. This is the single most common cause of a logo that looked perfect on the sample polo and disappointing on the hoodie.
Stitch count and cost
Embroidery pricing generally relates to stitch count, which is driven by the area covered and the density. A small outlined mark is a low stitch count; a large filled design is a high one, and a dense fill over a big area can be surprisingly expensive relative to a print.
That is worth knowing at design stage because it is controllable. An outlined or partially filled version of a mark can carry most of the visual weight at a fraction of the stitch count.
The stitch file is an asset
Digitising is usually a one-off cost per design and per size. The resulting file — commonly a DST — is then reused for every future run of that logo at that size, which is why reorders of an embroidered design skip that step.
Note "at that size". Scaling a stitch file up or down significantly does not work well, because stitch density and underlay were chosen for a specific dimension. A logo needed at chest size and cap size is generally two digitising jobs, and it is better to plan for that than to discover it.
Always approve a sew-out
A digital preview of a stitch file is a rendering, not the thing. Ask for a physical sew-out on the actual fabric before a production run, look at it in daylight, and check the small details rather than the overall impression.
That is the moment to say a letter has closed up or a line has thickened. After production it is a very expensive conversation, and embroidery cannot be removed without damaging the garment.
